Ravenswood Cabernet Sauvignon Vintners Blend 2012

Winemaker's Notes:

Soft tannins and subtle oak contribute well-balanced roundness and the finish lingers considerably longer than you might expect. If Cabernet is Californias luxury wine this one is arguably the best

No Wimpy Wines. That’s the motto of Ravenswood Winery, a winery that believes that white Zinfandel’s best quality is that it preserved Old Vine Zinfandel during Prohibition. That’s not just some flashy name either: Joel Peterson, founder and winemaker of Ravenswood and nicknamed “the Godfather of Zin,” lives it every day. He spent 15 tireless years trying to get his winery to turn a profit, and while his first harvest was in 1976, it was in 1992 that he finally quit his other job at a clinical lab, splitting his life in two the whole time. Financing the operation was always difficult. For many years, the winery moved around, trying to find a cheap place to house their operations. It wasn’t until their Vintners Blend program was launched that they were finally able to settle down with the money they made, in 1991. Starting in the mid 80s, Vintners Blend was a less expensive wine, thanks to the fact that it was created by blending many grapes from different vineyards. In 1982 Ravenswood made their first Zinfandel with grapes from multiple vineyards, creating its County Series: wines that feature regional distinctions. Today, it sources grapes from over 100 vineyards in northern California, a huge expansion from its original vagabond roots. Read less

When I saw this bottle on sale at my local merchant I thought I was getting quite a bargain since I have had Ravens before and liked it quite a bit. But what a disappointment. There is minimal, if not any, aromas at all. Not from the time I opened the bottle till I poured the wine into my glass. There is no fruity taste which I look for in a Cab. When tasting the wine my buds are saying 'burnt rubber'. I don't know for sure but maybe this wine needs a little more time to age and may taste better. A dissapointment for me from Ravens Wood.

Soft tannins and subtle oak contribute well-balanced roundness, and the finish lingers considerably longer than you might expect. If Cabernet is Californias luxury wine, this one is arguably the best bargain going.

Cassis-like fruit mingled with an oak spiciness, and earthy complexity. It is fresh, bright and pleasing to the nose. In the mouth, it is balanced, flavorful and has a long finish that is never heavy or cloying.

Winemaker Joel Peterson is famous for not only his skill at crafting fine wines, but also his ability to source fruit from outstanding vineyards. The quality of fruit in this wine is striking, especially on the palate. Dark currant, raspberry and a zippy black cherry edge deliver surprising structure and balance at this price range. A medium-bodied Cabernet with some real character, and a tasty bargain.

Riper and plusher than you might think at this price, with blackberry flavors that are well oaked. This is a fairly tannic wine, and it leaves the palate with a scour of astringency, but the fruity concentration makes it a value.

Sweet chocolate and blackberry flavors make for charming window dressing, supported by an underlying herbal quality and gutsy tannins. Drink now.

Here's a value in an everyday Cab. It's balanced, dry and full-bodied, with ripe, dusty tannins, a kiss of toast oak, and good currant, plum and blackberry flavors. Earns an extra point for the long finish.
