Ravenswood Cabernet Sauvignon Vintners Blend 2004

Member Review by tabednar:

I have always liked wines coming from Ravenswood. This is no exception. Noted aromas of red berry on the nose. Tasted blackberry and cherry flavors with a background sweetness that tied everything together. Very decent Cabernet from California at this price.

No Wimpy Wines. That’s the motto of Ravenswood Winery, a winery that believes that white Zinfandel’s best quality is that it preserved Old Vine Zinfandel during Prohibition. That’s not just some flashy name either: Joel Peterson, founder and winemaker of Ravenswood and nicknamed “the Godfather of Zin,” lives it every day. He spent 15 tireless years trying to get his winery to turn a profit, and while his first harvest was in 1976, it was in 1992 that he finally quit his other job at a clinical lab, splitting his life in two the whole time. Financing the operation was always difficult. For many years, the winery moved around, trying to find a cheap place to house their operations. It wasn’t until their Vintners Blend program was launched that they were finally able to settle down with the money they made, in 1991. Starting in the mid 80s, Vintners Blend was a less expensive wine, thanks to the fact that it was created by blending many grapes from different vineyards. In 1982 Ravenswood made their first Zinfandel with grapes from multiple vineyards, creating its County Series: wines that feature regional distinctions. Today, it sources grapes from over 100 vineyards in northern California, a huge expansion from its original vagabond roots. Read less

Coconut Rice Sweet Potato Cheesecake

RiceSelect's creamy Arborio gets blended with sweet potato, coconut milk and vanilla to create this decadent cheesecake. Pairs well with Saunternes; a white dessert wine that has hints of coconut from aging in oak barrels.

I was surprised by how good this wine was. This wine had nice elements of blackberry, cassis, vanilla, and oak. One of the best parts about this wine was the great balance of ripe fruit with moderate tannins and a smooth, soft texture. This wine was fruit forward but definitely not one-dimensional. Great quality to price ratio.

This particular Cab Sauv is not surprising in its flavor, sorry to say. Its flavors don't jump out at you, and in a way there's nothing particularly distinctive about it. However, the black cherry, currant, and spicey flavors are present and noticeable. The taste does not last long, which can be a bit disappointing, but the ending texture is almost butter-like as the wine slips down the tongue. The tannin is not overpowering at all, letting the natural flavors come out more. The give and take balance of this wine gives us a cab that can be enjoyed any time, though especially with food (meat or a Fall pasta dish - e.g. squash). While I wouldn't run out and get it right now, I would keep it in the back of your mind next time you peruse the wine selection. Looking for a nice, smooth wine to go with a meal, and looking to keep the price on the cheap? This won't let you down.
