Raven Oaks Syrah 2003
I bought a bottle of Raven Oaks Cabernet Franc 2002 and one of the Syrah 2003. I periodically will pick up a bottle of wine at Big Lots, hoping for something cheap and drinkable. Disappointed most of the time. The Cab was not good, but was pleasantly surprised by the Syrah. Deep ruby color and what I would call "yummy". Not a very sophisticated term, but I like it. Typical Syrah and VERY drinkable. Went back and bought two more cases. I noted that they also had a Raven Oaks Syrah 2002. Can't vouch for that one.Add winemaker's notes

We brought three bottles home from a discount store...Big Lots to be exact. Seriously, as a joke. Return policy?...no problem if bottles are corked...not stored well etc...so...we returned immediately and bought four cases. Called family, friends...all feel the same way. Granted...won't be putting in wine cellar...but will certainly be enjoying for the next few months. Yummmmmmyyyy...run, don't walk...get yourself as much as you can...you won't regret it! We give this wine a FOUR!!!
Annie likes but agrees with mop
After picking my store clean of the 2003 Syrah, I tried a 2001. Not good at all compared to the '03. Sorry Mopjack got a bad bottle or two.
I would give this a 2 glass rating. It may have very well have been a 3 maybe a 4. However, I purchsed my bottle yesterday at a discount store just to try and I don't believe the bottle was properly protected from heat. Slightest browning in color with perhaps a hint of oxidation. I got the bottle for a fraction of the cost when it was previously available. So all-in-all... it was a decent purcase and wine. Going to try it again
I tried a bottle each of the 01 and 03 Raven Oaks Syrah. The 01 was ready to turn. The 03 was actually very good. I ended up going back to Big Lots and buying the remainder of the 03, unfornately only 11 bottles left. I would have purchase more if available. At $4.00 it was almost like it was free!
Also bought from Big Lots for $4. What a find!! I drink alot of reds and my opinion is that this is a very complex, delicious Syrah. Not heavy on the tannins, beautiful bouquet, goes great with food. I try hard not to be too influenced by the winerys description on the back of the bottle but...if you read this one it details the extra care and expense they put into this wonderful wine - and you can taste it! I will try to find it at Big Lots again and would buy anything from this winery in the future. A toast to you - Raven Oaks - You guys/girls rock!
