Raul Pérez Mencía Bierzo Vico 2008

External Review by Premier Wine & Spirits:

The 2008 Vico made from 100% Mencia with 30% whole clusters and aged for 9 months in seasoned French oak. Opaque purple-colored, it offers up a slightly reticent bouquet of damp earth, mineral, incense, black cherry, and black raspberry. Dense and loaded on the palate, the flavors are already complex and mouth-filling. Impeccably balanced and with a 45-second finish, it has the stuffing to blossom for another 2ndash;3 years but can be approached now. It is a great value.

Inky ruby. Expressive aromas of dark berries, allspice and anise. Deeply pitched blackberry and bitter cherry flavors are enlivened by tangy acidity and pick up musky licorice and herbal notes with air. The spicy component returns on the fine-grained, incisive finish. This benefits from air: Irsquo;d give it at least a few more years of bottle age.

The 2008 Ultreia De Valtuille received the same elevage as its less expensive sibling. To say that has more of everything is a gross understatement. The complex aromatics leap from the glass; on the palate the wine is dense, rich, and velvety, and it gives true meaning to the expression “iron fist in a velvet glove.” It is an extraordinary effort that should drink well for 10–15 years, probably longer.

The 2005 Ultreia De Valtuille is also 100% Mencia from Bierzo. Of the 315 cases produced, a mere 15 will make it to the USA. Opaque purple-colored, it offers greater complexity aromatically and on the palate. It has an exotic, mineral-dominated nose with lots of floral elements, blueberry, black cherry, and black raspberry. Layered, opulent, yet elegant, this lengthy wine has 6-8 years of aging potential and will provide much pleasure through 2025.
