Gonzo Disclosure: We visited this winery on August 2nd, 2010 and got a smidge of a discount for the tasting, but otherwise bought four bottles to take home with us anyway. Not only did we pay for this bottle of the '07 Meritage- I wish we'd paid for MORE. 15 minute decant, then back into the bottle she went. Served a touch "chilled", then warmed and opened up as we "imbibed". From stem to stern this is a wine that is a great example of why 2007 is held in such high esteem by those who enjoy Virginia wines- and particularly their reds. Beautiful, opulent nose chock full of smoky red fruit, trailing off with hints of cassis. The approach on the palate is open, even though young, and develops on the palate in the form of cherries, other macerated red fruits, and flows into its finish gracefully, revealing soft but noticibly integrated tannins- giving the wine a delightful backbone and making it perfect as a pairing with soft cheeses, lamb chops, and the ribeye steaks we happened to be munching on that night. All in all, a very well-rounded red that lived up to high expectations.
