Rancho Zabaco Sauvignon Blanc Russian River Valley Reserve 2005

External Review by Premier Wine & Spirits:

Very tart and lively, with intense lemon, grapefruit, passion fruit and green apple flavors. Would shine with food. Drink now.

Given to a 14-year-old boy in 1843, the 17,000 acre land in northern Sonoma County was originally farmland. Dubbed “Tzabaco Rancho” by its owner, it was the basis for Rancho Zabaco’s name and future success. Founder and winemaker Eric Cinnamon devotes his time to the land, producing only the wines that grow best in the area: Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel. Their land in the Russian River Valley is devoted to Sauvignon Blanc, while Dry Creek Valley, the “Zin Zone,” consistently produces world-class Zinfandel. Read less

The 2001 Sauvignon Blanc Reserve reveals notes of figs, flint, freshly mown grass, and melons. It is light-bodied and fruit-driven. This is an excellent value.

The pungent scent of lime keeps this wine cool and tight, even as the flavor is rich as nectarine jam. It has a deep sauvignon scent and flavor, with an edge of green that sharpens it for food. Chill this for bay scallops sautéed with leeks.

This smooth wine has good balance, and a fairly full mouthfeel. Even on the palate, it shows a bit of both ends of the Sauvignon Blanc spectrum - the crisp grassy, herb and grapefruit side and also fig, pear and melon as foundation.

No Bull! This is a crisp, juicy Sauvignon Blanc to sip while sitting on the deck, perhaps with Thai chicken salad or pasta primavera. If you have not tried a Sauvignon Blanc, now is the time, this is the wine.

Green as fresh cut grass, with flavors of melon and herb, this sauvignon is fresh and frisky. Serve ice cold with a plate of razor clams.
