Ramos Pinto Vintage Port 2000

Winemaker's Notes:

Pretty young Port. Aromas of crushed berries and orange peel, with a hint of fresh herbs. Full-bodied, slightly sweet, with plenty of ripe fruit and firm tannins. Medium finish. Better than from barrel. Best after 2007.(WS)

When walking in the chateau grounds it is obvious that its history goes further back than the 1855 classification. Citran is actually one of the Medoc's oldest seigneuries. Numerous Marquis de Donnissan, related to the family of France, reigned here for 600 years and only abandoned their chateau in the middle of the 18th century. Since then the chateau has gone through different phases. The various owners and the general financial crisis meant that the surface of the vineyards varied between 90 hectares to less than 4 hectares. The wine's quality reflected these fluctuations. Things got better in 1945 when the Miailhe brothers bought the property. Ten years ago a serious boost in the research for quality was set in motion. An accumulation of hard work and the huge investments initiated by the precedent Japanese owners brought Citran back towards the Haut Medoc elite. This transition was carried through under the leadership of the new and exacting owners. The Merlaut-Villars family is well known in the Medoc. They are true connoisseurs of wine and land. A symbol of this old cru Bourgeois wine's new-found youth is the arrival of young Céline Villars who will from now on represent the chateau. Read less

Lots of fruit. Tastes very young still... the alcohol/hot taste is still strong. Cassis and licorice dominate layers of dark flavors. Very long finish. It's almost, dare I say, "goth." This is second day open for me (and only about 1.5 hours in decanter tonight) and I think it will improve a great deal with more time in the decanter--or, of course, more time in the bottle. Still for a 1994 vinatage Port that I got for under $40, I am pleased. If I had another bottle, I'd hold for 5-10 more years, or as long as I could hold out.

Considered one of the greatest houses producing vintage port, Ramos Pinot dates back to 1880. Their wines are produced in a traditional style with grapes sourced from their four estate quintas. 2011 was an exceptional vintage and this Port is a rare find. Wine Spectator scored it 96 points saying "Shows an essence of raspberry and wild plum, bursting with loads of fresh acidity. Very fresh and juicy, offering shadings of graphite that extend on the finish. A refined and elegant style that lingers with plenty of juiciness. Best from 2020 through 2050."

The 2007 Ramos Pinto Vintage Port is a saturated purple/black color with aromas of damp earth pencil lead espresso licorice and blackberry. On the palate it has good but not exceptional volume ample savory fruit enough fine-grained tannin for balance and moderate length. It is a medium-weight offering that will evolve for 6-8 years and drink well through 2027. Robert Parkers Wine Advocate.

Finely tannic, this is a solid wine, full of dark fruit skins, dry, dense and impressive in structure. It shows every sign of aging potential, from its solid tannins to its tight, red berry fruits and black fig flavors. Wine Enthusiast. A Port wine from Douro in Portugal. 2007 Ramos-Pinto Vintage Port 750ml

A bright, almost opaque red colour with bluish tones.Intense, full aroma of very ripe fruit such as grapes and figs, chocolate and a hint of anise.A full-bodied but smooth and elegant wine made from very mature grapes. Extremely fruitywith smooth, well-balanced tannins.Well structured and long-lasting, it promises excellent development.
