Ramos Pinto Duas Quintas Tinto Reserva 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

A top class producer of ruby port, tawny port and table wines. Ramos was purchased by Louis Roederer in 1990 and is built (like the Champagne) on quality. Quinta de Ervamoira is located in the heart of the Douro, in schist soil and at low altitude. The grapes are grown in a hot, dry climate, allowing for deep maturation. In granite soil, at a higher altitude, we find Quinta dos Bons Ares where the grapes mature in fresh, windy weather that gives them freshness and vivacity. The grapes from our Ervamoira and Bons Ares estates were hand-harvested from specially selected plots. The Duas Quintas Reserva has a complex nose, in which subtle hints of orange blossom and spices give way to aromas of red fruits like strawberries, plums and cherries. It hits the palate with volume and develops a good tannic structure. The coolness characteristic of 2007 has given the wine a good balance and a long finish. Duas Quintas Reserva Tinto has a recognised aging potential and continues to be a classic. We recommend pairing Reserva 2007 with complex meat dishes (preferably game) and roast or grilled red meats. It also pairs well with strong cheeses at the end of a meal. You can also enjoy it with strawberry and dark chocolate desserts.

When walking in the chateau grounds it is obvious that its history goes further back than the 1855 classification. Citran is actually one of the Medoc's oldest seigneuries. Numerous Marquis de Donnissan, related to the family of France, reigned here for 600 years and only abandoned their chateau in the middle of the 18th century. Since then the chateau has gone through different phases. The various owners and the general financial crisis meant that the surface of the vineyards varied between 90 hectares to less than 4 hectares. The wine's quality reflected these fluctuations. Things got better in 1945 when the Miailhe brothers bought the property. Ten years ago a serious boost in the research for quality was set in motion. An accumulation of hard work and the huge investments initiated by the precedent Japanese owners brought Citran back towards the Haut Medoc elite. This transition was carried through under the leadership of the new and exacting owners. The Merlaut-Villars family is well known in the Medoc. They are true connoisseurs of wine and land. A symbol of this old cru Bourgeois wine's new-found youth is the arrival of young Céline Villars who will from now on represent the chateau. Read less
