Ramon Bilbao Reserva Tempranillo Rioja 2011

External Review by We Speak Wine:

Winemaking: Ramón Bilbao reserva wines are created with the intention that the wines will be aged for several years. Therefore, the wine is blended so that its evolution is slow and fulfilling. Heightened fruitiness emerges from intense maceration to give the wine a more modern profile. Vintage Notes: 2011 had very favorable weather which allowed for optimal growing conditions. The excellent grape quality created a perfect fermentation process, resulting in well-structured wines high in color. The limited vineyard production made this vintage classified as one of the best in the last 30 years. Tasting Notes: Garnet red with medium-high depth of color. An intense, complex nose of ripe fruit mingled with aromas resulting from long aging. Aromas of baked goods, nutmeg, cinnamon sticks, and dried leaves. Elegant mouth-feel with a long finish. pH: 3.55 RS: 2.1 g/L TA: 6.1 g/L Alc.: 13.5%

Tasting Notes: On the nose, the wine features balsam, chocolate, and coconut overlaid by ripe red fruit preserve. On the palate, it is full bodied with integrated tannins and food-friendly acidity. The persistent finish features notes of cigar box, fruit preserve, spices, licorice, and leather. Vintage Notes: With its hot and dry summer and moderate rainfall, 2009 Riojas feature rich fruit, full body, and rounded tannins. Winemaking: Clusters were picked by hand and underwent further screening at the bodega. Careful selection and fermentation of the grapes was followed by 20 months of aging in 2-year-old American oak barriques. The wine was then bottled and taken down to the cellar, where it continued to mature for a further 18 months. Varietal Composition: 90% Tempranillo 10% Mazuelo and Graciano pH: 3.55 TA: 5.6 g/L RS: 2.1 g/L Alc.: 14.20%

The smoke and mineral notes frame a core of black cherry and licorice in this sleek red. Not muscular but racy and pure showing balance and freshness in a savory style. Drink now through 2018. - T.M. Wine Spectator.

Tasting Notes:Intense garnet red with light brick-red tones on the rim. On the nose it unfolds from the first moment, balsamic notes from the wood over a chocolate and coconut background, all of it surrounded with ripen red fruit preserve. It is quite obvious the tobacco and cedar wood presence as well. In the mouth it is full, slightly astringent and with a vivid acidity. Hints of cocoa and roasted wood strengthen, and the persistent finish create a mix difficult to describe: Cigar box, fruit preserve, spices, liquorice, broom, leather. - WineryVarietal:90% Tempranillo10% Mazuelo and GracianoWinemaking:A strict selection of grapes from Rioja Alta picked by hand during the second and third weeks in OctoberAging:Artful and careful selection and fermentation of the grapes was followed by 18 months aging in American oak casks. The wine was then bottled and taken down to our cellar, where it continued to mature for a further 18 months in complete quietness. Serving & Pairing:Serve at 17 ̊C - 18 ̊C (62.6 ̊F - 64.4 ̊F). It pairs perfectly with international foods (curries, marinated fish and spice dishes) and traditional red meats, game and cured cheeses.Alcohol: 13.5%

The 2008 Reserva is classical in all senses starting with the blend of 90% Tempranillo and 5% each of Mazuelo and Graciano followed by its color aroma and palate. It s bright cherry-colored with aromas of red fruits intermixed with notes of leather truffles and smoked meat and a juicy supple palate with good acidity and good length. This is a great Reserva and very good value. Drink now-2019. 91+ - Luis Gutierrez Robert Parkers Wine Advocate.

Bodegas Ramon Bilbao was founded in 1924. Already in the nineteenth century, the family Bilbao Murga, with his father D. Ramon at the helm, marketed Ramon Bilbao wines and Vi a Turzaballa.
