Ramon Bilbao Albarino Rias Baixas 2017

External Review by We Speak Wine:

Winemaking: Each plot is harvested in small crates on the day that the grapes achieve perfect ripeness. The clusters then pass over the sorting table from which only the best berries go on to be processed. The first musts from the plots chosen for Ramón Bilbao are slowly fermented in tanks to bring out the freshness and exotic character of the albariño. Tasting Notes: Straw-yellow in color with bright green accents the color of Granny Smith apples. On the nose, fresh aromas and a salty touch which mingle with nuances of apricot and peach. On the palate, elegant freshness harmoniously balances the sweet sensations left by the fruit flavors. Smooth and supple with a full body and a lively finish.

The clusters then pass over the sorting table from which only the best berries go on to be processed. The first musts from the plots chosen for Ramón Bilbao are slowly fermented in tanks to bring out the freshness and exotic character of the albariño. Vintage Notes: Heavy autumn rainfall helped old leaves fall from the vines before winter arrived with cold, dry days. An exceptionally warm spring followed, leading to an early blossom that allowed the grapes to set perfectly during the month of June. The traditional Atlantic climate also came with the summer: long bright, sunny days mixed with intermittent, light rain. The result was early ripening. We began picking in the second week of September, harvesting grapes with great aromatic potential. Albarino is the most exciting white wine to come along in years. Its perfumed aromas, crisp flavors and compelling affinity with food has made it all the rage. This one from top Rioja Bodega Ramon Bilbao is a beautiful example at a bargain price. Harvested by hand from vineyards located on the valley terraces and steep slopes of the Val do Salnes, over-looking the Atlantic ocean. Temperature-controlled maceration and vinification of free-run must impart the wine with its unique characteristics of freshness and aromatic intensity. This wine won a Gold Medal with a 91 point score in the San Diego International Wine and Spirits Competition and Wine Enthusiast said "Apple and melon aromas are clean, stony and direct. This feels juicy while also offering ample body weight. Tangerine and nectarine flavors finish long, minerally and ripe, with none of Albariño’s common pithy bitterness."
