Ramey Syrah Sonoma Coast Rodgers Creek Vineyard 2012

Winemaker's Notes:

94+ points Antonio Galloni (Vinous): The 2012 Syrah Rodgers Creek Vineyard is the most delicate and refined of Ramey's 2012 Syrahs. Here the fruit is red-toned and quite pretty, with floral and spice overtones that add lift. Like all of the David Ramey's 2012 Syrahs, the Rodgers Creek emphasizes fruit over varietal notes, but there is a sense of inner perfume and overall grace that gives the wine an attractive sense of lift. Drink: 2017-2024. (Jan 2015)

Ramey Wine Cellars:
David Ramey started his career in wine with little more than a degree in enology and a dream. David Ramey started his career in wine with little more than a degree in enology and a dream. Then, after nearly two decades of creating benchmark wines for such California wineries as Matanzas Creek, Chalk Hill, Dominus and Rudd, David Ramey and his wife Carla founded Ramey Wine Cellars in 1996. “Owning one’s own winery is the dream of every winemaker,” David says, looking back on the path that led him to build his own. It took time, planning and a profound understanding of how best to bring together all the elements—from the grapes, to the winery materials, and a top-notch team of professionals—to make it all work. Ramey Wine Cellars is located off the town square in the quaint Sonoma County town of Healdsburg. It is a sleek, efficient, no-frills work space dedicated exclusively to making the highest quality wines possible. “In our own winery, we’re not distracted, as I had been, by the ongoing and changing needs of an employer,” David notes. “At Ramey Wine Cellars, we try to foster a team environment where everybody feels empowered to contribute and make a difference in both winery operations and the wine itself. My hope is to create an atmosphere of great opportunity for all.” The winery produces authentic, hand-crafted wines made in an Old World tradition--coupled with New World innovation and California terroir. Owned exclusively by David and his wife Carla, grapes are sourced from vineyards with which David has worked for many years. Their next project will be to purchase land and develop their own vineyards. Consistently rated among the best wines in California, the winery remains committed to Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Syrah as its primary varietals. Winery tastings are available by appointment. Tasting Room We are open for tastings by appointment Monday through Saturday (excluding holidays). We offer a hosted tasting in a seated environment so that you can relax and truly appreciate the wines. Read less

This deep and very generous wine is long on fruit fully ripened and laced with lots of gamy varietal spice but it stops short of being too much and it strikes us as being a little less lavish and sturdy than many past Ramey bottlings. That said it wants for nothing in the way of accessible richness and its easy manner very much invites drinking now. Yet for those who would put it in the cellar rest assured that it will be worth the wait of some three to five years. Connoisseurs Guide.

Glass-staining purple. Highly complex nose and palate feature black and blue fruits, spicecake, floral oil and smoky minerals. Shows seductive sweetness, excellent depth and a pliant, seamless texture. Fine-grained tannins add shape to the extremely long, spicy finish. This wines intensity and focus are outstanding. This was just bottled so it saw over two years of barrel aging. Ramey is intrigued by the possibilities of extended elevage for syrah and intimated that he might push his 2009s even farther out. Although they are difficult to sell, two wines not to be underestimated are Ramey's Syrahs. Outrageously opulent, thick, inky and impressive, the 2008 Syrah Rodger's Creek Vineyard displays notes of lard, ink, graphite, blackberries and cassis. This opulent, full-bodied, thick, juicy Syrah should drink well for a decade or more. - Robert Parker 93-95 Points ** Only 12 in Stock **
