Ramey Platt Vineyard Chardonnay 2014

Member Review by EMark:

Lightly oaked—nice. Plenty of up front tropical fruit—passion fruit, pineapple, kiwi. Very delightful tart acid. Tingle on the tongue from the acid lasts for several seconds. A very enjoyable and refreshing wine.

David Ramey started his career in wine with little more than a degree in enology and a dream. Then, after nearly two decades of creating benchmark wines for such California wineries as Matanzas Creek, Chalk Hill, Dominus and Rudd, David Ramey and his wife Carla founded Ramey Wine Cellars in 1996. “Owning one’s own winery is the dream of every winemaker,” David says, looking back on the path that led him to build his own. It took time, planning and a profound understanding of how best to bring together all the elements—from the grapes, to the winery materials, and a top-notch team of professionals—to make it all work. Ramey Wine Cellars is located off the town square in the quaint Sonoma County town of Healdsburg. It is a sleek, efficient, no-frills work space dedicated exclusively to making the highest quality wines possible. “In our own winery, we’re not distracted, as I had been, by the ongoing and changing needs of an employer,” David notes. “At Ramey Wine Cellars, we try to foster a team environment where everybody feels empowered to contribute and make a difference in both winery operations and the wine itself. My hope is to create an atmosphere of great opportunity for all.” The winery produces authentic, hand-crafted wines made in an Old World tradition--coupled with New World innovation and California terroir. Owned exclusively by David and his wife Carla, grapes are sourced from vineyards with which David has worked for many years. Their next project will be to purchase land and develop their own vineyards. Consistently rated among the best wines in California, the winery remains committed to Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Syrah as its primary varietals. Winery tastings are available by appointment. Not many producers get fruit from this magical vineyard, sought after for being cool, coastal and meticulously farmed. This wine speaks to all that, offering sublime Meyer lemon, pear and golden honey around a balanced soul and wild ginger-infused intensity.

From the coolest site, the 2012 Chardonnay Platt Vineyard (1,260 cases) possesses a Chablis-like personality of quince, white currants, lemon oil and orange blossom notes, a wet stony minerality, medium body and crisp acids. It should drink nicely for 5–6 years, possibly longer.

Tight and slow to unfold, this reveals a focused core of fruit and spice, pushed along by intense flavors of green apple, ripe pineapple and citrus, ending with a wet stone vibrancy. Drink now through 2020.

The 2010 Chardonnay Platt Vineyard stands out in this range. A big, broad-shouldered wine, the Platt is actually reminiscent of a red wine in its structure. Lemon, oyster shells, salt and all sorts of citrus notes are woven throughout in this intense, saline finish. Think of the Platt as a California version of Corton-Charlemagne. Anticipated maturity: 2014–2020.

Light yellow-gold. Ripe pear and peach on the nose, with exotic floral and mineral accents. Shows very good energy in the mouth, displaying pink grapefruit and quince notes deepened by musky herbs and smoky lees. Finishes firm and stony, with excellent length and a hint of white flowers.
