Food Pairings for Ramey Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Dark, dark almost black and a bit murky looking in the glass. Very big, rich nose--oaky and somewhat raisiny. Very nice on the tip of the tongue. It seems to slide in without any taste sensation for a second or so. There is only a minimum of currant fruit flavor. Also, hint of a green pepper flavor. Fairly serious tannin with accompanying bitterness might put off some. US$44.99 at Wine Club in Santa Ana in 2008.
Ruby red in color. Perfumed and heady on the nose. Pure and clean on the palate, this has an upfront red fruited profile of red cherries and raspberries as well as some currants and kirsch. A beautiful lush texture with a slightly elevated but in control acid level. A big and chewy tannin level makes this a candidate for cellaring for at least 2 to 4 years. Slightly hot on the finish this is surely a youngster with promise. From a half bottle, and I will get some more.
External Reviews for Ramey Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Ramey’s 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon is a spherical wine with all of its elements in place. Mocha, espresso, blackberries, incense and graphite all come together in a wine that impresses for its exceptional overall balance. White flowers, cloves and asphalt all develop later, lending an element of exoticism that is simply compelling. The 2010 is a blend of valley floor and hillside fruit. Anticipated maturity: 2016–2030.
Opaque ruby. Powerful, smoke-accented cherry and dark berry aromas are complicated by notes of dark chocolate and peppery spices. Rich yet lively, offering intense blackcurrant and bitter cherry flavors that gain sweetness with air. Closes broad and smooth, with gentle tannins and a seductively sweet dark berry quality.
Opaque purple. Dark berries, cherry pit and chocolate on the nose, with licorice and black cardamon nuances adding complexity. Sappy, expansive blackcurrant and cherry flavors show very good depth, with a peppery quality providing lift. Fine-grained tannins add grip to the sweet, subtly floral finish. This suave wine drinks very well right now.
The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon is a big, dramatic wine endowed with tremendous richness and power. A large-scaled, dramatic wine, the 2009 Cabernet sweeps across the palate with generous, deeply resonant fruit. This is shaping up to be another beauty from David Ramey. The 2009 is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from Lamoreaux, DeSantis, J. Davies and Somerston. Anticipated maturity: 2014–2021.
Huge press for this 2009 Cab, and it is extremely limited! David Ramey is a Napa Valley innovator, and his wines reflect pioneering spirit. This cab is deep, layered, and extremely age-worthy.
A stunning yet reasonably priced, high end Napa Cabernet Sauvignon is the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa. The final bottling from the extraordinary Larkmead Vineyard, it boasts a dense purple color as well as a big, sweet bouquet of blueberry and black currant fruit intertwined with licorice, bay leaf, cedar and fruitcake notes. Full-bodied and opulent, this precocious 2007 is drinkable now and should evolve for another 15+ years. (includes 5% merlot, 4% malbec and 2% each of cabernet franc and petit verdot) Inky ruby. Intensely perfumed bouquet of red- and blackcurrant, dark chocolate and anise, with mounting spiciness. More open-knit and accessible than last years tasting suggested it would be, offering sweet dark fruit and cherry flavors and building tannins. The fruit takes over on the finish, which echoes the spice and cherry notes. This has turned out better than I expected, perhaps because all of the Larkmead fruit went into this wine in this vintage. Taut, dry and earth...
