Ramey Hyde Vineyard Carneros-Napa Chardonnay 2005

Winemaker's Notes:

Also north of the Carneros Highway, but further west, the terrain here is more rolling than that of Hyde, the soil lighter and more friable. This year’s bottling is the first to come entirely from B-block, planted in 2001 to a Wente selection from the Hyde Vineyard, so the vines were seven years old this vintage and just coming into their maturity. Hudson Vineyard wines tend to a more muscular, masculine character—broad-shouldered, if you will.

David Ramey started his career in wine with little more than a degree in enology and a dream. Then, after nearly two decades of creating benchmark wines for such California wineries as Matanzas Creek, Chalk Hill, Dominus and Rudd, David Ramey and his wife Carla founded Ramey Wine Cellars in 1996. “Owning one’s own winery is the dream of every winemaker,” David says, looking back on the path that led him to build his own. It took time, planning and a profound understanding of how best to bring together all the elements—from the grapes, to the winery materials, and a top-notch team of professionals—to make it all work. Ramey Wine Cellars is located off the town square in the quaint Sonoma County town of Healdsburg. It is a sleek, efficient, no-frills work space dedicated exclusively to making the highest quality wines possible. “In our own winery, we’re not distracted, as I had been, by the ongoing and changing needs of an employer,” David notes. “At Ramey Wine Cellars, we try to foster a team environment where everybody feels empowered to contribute and make a difference in both winery operations and the wine itself. My hope is to create an atmosphere of great opportunity for all.” The winery produces authentic, hand-crafted wines made in an Old World tradition--coupled with New World innovation and California terroir. Owned exclusively by David and his wife Carla, grapes are sourced from vineyards with which David has worked for many years. Their next project will be to purchase land and develop their own vineyards. Consistently rated among the best wines in California, the winery remains committed to Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Syrah as its primary varietals. Winery tastings are available by appointment. Medium yellow. Knockout nose combines lime blossom, soft citrus notes, pear and white flowers. Sweet, juicy and penetrating, with highly complex flavors of soft citrus fruits, lime, peach, nectarine, flowers and mint. At once solid and vibrant. Finishes with palate-staining persistence and terrific grip. A great California chardonnay.

The expressive, richly fruit, exotic 2002 Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard is exuberant, flamboyant, and unmistakably from the New World. This hedonistic Chardonnay is best consumed over the next 1-3 years.

Soil-inflected aromas of minerals, iodine and nutmeg. Offers a rare combination of texture, breadth and verve for California chardonnay. Really expansive in the middle palate, with powerful fruit and spice character complicated by a peaty suggestion of Islay scotch. A major mouthful of chardonnay.

Yellow-gold. Stunningly nuanced aromas of smoky lemon, lime, poached pear, licorice and iodine complicated by dusty talc and white flowers. Impressively chewy and deeply concentrated, offering strong citrus and orchard fruit flavors underscored by smoky minerals and succulent herbs. This extremely complex wine has the concentration and balance to reward patience.

What a geat aroma this wine has; refined oak and all the smoky, vanilla trimmings, framing pineapple, orange rind and lemon custard aromas and flavors. This massive Chard just gives off oodles of fruit. It is bhalanced with rich, brilliant acidity.

Flavors of lemon cream, star fruit, white peaches, and graham crackers all come together and remain focused and balanced by a lively acidity that seduces and inspires. This wine is just now coming into its own and will continue to last for the next few years. The finish is smooth and complex, and continues long after you swallow. The wine is massive and yet still remains refined and in perfect harmony. This wine is perfect for any and all occasions.

Clean and refreshing, with ripe, fresh, snappy citrus, green apple and pear flavors that are pure, focused, moderately rich and pleasantly cleansing, with a snappy minerality. Drink now through 2015.
