Ramey Wine Cellars:
David Ramey started his career in wine with little more than a degree in enology and a dream. David Ramey started his career in wine with little more than a degree in enology and a dream. Then, after nearly two decades of creating benchmark wines for such California wineries as Matanzas Creek, Chalk Hill, Dominus and Rudd, David Ramey and his wife Carla founded Ramey Wine Cellars in 1996. “Owning one’s own winery is the dream of every winemaker,” David says, looking back on the path that led him to build his own. It took time, planning and a profound understanding of how best to bring together all the elements—from the grapes, to the winery materials, and a top-notch team of professionals—to make it all work. Ramey Wine Cellars is located off the town square in the quaint Sonoma County town of Healdsburg. It is a sleek, efficient, no-frills work space dedicated exclusively to making the highest quality wines possible. “In our own winery, we’re not distracted, as I had been, by the ongoing and changing needs of an employer,” David notes. “At Ramey Wine Cellars, we try to foster a team environment where everybody feels empowered to contribute and make a difference in both winery operations and the wine itself. My hope is to create an atmosphere of great opportunity for all.” The winery produces authentic, hand-crafted wines made in an Old World tradition--coupled with New World innovation and California terroir. Owned exclusively by David and his wife Carla, grapes are sourced from vineyards with which David has worked for many years. Their next project will be to purchase land and develop their own vineyards. Consistently rated among the best wines in California, the winery remains committed to Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Syrah as its primary varietals. Winery tastings are available by appointment. This wine is a deep ruby red, complex aroma that is sweet & smooth on the palate. This wine finishes with red fruits and is such a delightful taste. I got it on sale for $29.95 and believe me it's well worth $35. I immediately bought more! This wine is absolutely perfect!

Well-proportioned in a Bordeaux-like fashion, with cedary currant, herb, sage and anise. This is a deceptively complex wine, with lots of subtle nuances. Firm, ripe and tannic. Decant for now. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Petit Verdot and Malbec. Best from 2008 through 2013.

Offers aromas of ripe plum and berry, with spice and sage. Though firm and full-bodied, this reveals a sense of elegance and finesse, ending with integrated tannins. Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Best from 2010 through 2016.

Good full ruby. Blackberry, licorice and menthol on the nose. Sweet, dense and rich, with a silkier texture than the 2003 and strong chocolatey fruit. Finishes with plenty of tannins, but has the fruit to support them.

The 2002 Claret (59% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot and 13% Cabernet Franc) boasts deep, cedary, black currant fruit, medium to full body, broad flavors, and a long, pure finish.

Good full ruby-red. Aromas of cassis, blueberry, roasted plum, melted chocolate, smoke and earth. Lush and silky, with chocolatey flavors showing an almost porty ripeness. Very broad but not overly sweet. Finishes with a wave of dusty tannins.

The 2007 Claret, which is Ramey's easiest to drink and appreciate wine, is a seductive blend of primarily Cabernet Sauvignon with some Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec included. Its dense ruby/purple hue is followed by a velvety textured, plush, round, generous wine with lots of texture and fruit. This high quality effort should be drunk over the next decade. David Ramey also produces Syrah and Chardonnay from the Sonoma Coast, Russian River and Carneros, which will be reviewed in the February, 2011 issue. Another look at his 2007 Napa offerings essentially confirm my comments of last year. I tasted through David Ramey's 2009 barrel samples and they all displayed the friendly, charming, upfront fruit of this vintage. In many ways, they will be even more drinkable than the 2007s and 2008s upon release, but due to the style of the vintage, they do not have quite the power, punch or concentration of those two years. However, they are charming efforts and those who sometimes find California wines too rich may want to take a serious look at this vintage.
