Ramey Claret Napa Valley 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

93 points Wine Spectator: Bordeaux-like in its subtlety and restraint, yet rich, flavorful, full-bodied and expansive, with a mix of cedar, currant, cigar box, tar and mineral. Firm and focused, its elegance and refinement are impressive. Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Malbec, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2018. (10/15/10)

David Ramey started his career in wine with little more than a degree in enology and a dream. Then, after nearly two decades of creating benchmark wines for such California wineries as Matanzas Creek, Chalk Hill, Dominus and Rudd, David Ramey and his wife Carla founded Ramey Wine Cellars in 1996. “Owning one’s own winery is the dream of every winemaker,” David says, looking back on the path that led him to build his own. It took time, planning and a profound understanding of how best to bring together all the elements—from the grapes, to the winery materials, and a top-notch team of professionals—to make it all work. Ramey Wine Cellars is located off the town square in the quaint Sonoma County town of Healdsburg. It is a sleek, efficient, no-frills work space dedicated exclusively to making the highest quality wines possible. “In our own winery, we’re not distracted, as I had been, by the ongoing and changing needs of an employer,” David notes. “At Ramey Wine Cellars, we try to foster a team environment where everybody feels empowered to contribute and make a difference in both winery operations and the wine itself. My hope is to create an atmosphere of great opportunity for all.” The winery produces authentic, hand-crafted wines made in an Old World tradition--coupled with New World innovation and California terroir. Owned exclusively by David and his wife Carla, grapes are sourced from vineyards with which David has worked for many years. Their next project will be to purchase land and develop their own vineyards. Consistently rated among the best wines in California, the winery remains committed to Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Syrah as its primary varietals. Winery tastings are available by appointment. The perfect holiday wine! It has a musty, herbal, sagebrush filled nose. Woody. Inviting. It's pure, rich, structured and exhibits pure flavors of dark plum, currant, tobacco and sage with some cedar and other spices, like mulled holiday spices. Hints of clove. Very herbal and woody all in the best way. It's truly a wine built for the December holidays. Very nice!

What a fantastic Bordeaux blend with flavors of black currant, tobacco, and spice intermixed with chocolate and sweet cedar on a long.........finish! I can't believe the listed selling prices vary between $20-$23. In Jersey we pay anywhere from $29.99-$34.00 a bottle; and it's worth every penny! This is a notch above other clarets...had an 07 & 08. Great Claret!

This wine is a deep ruby red, complex aroma that is sweet & smooth on the palate. This wine finishes with red fruits and is such a delightful taste. I got it on sale for $29.95 and believe me it's well worth $35. I immediately bought more! This wine is absolutely perfect!

Beef stew paired beautifully with this ultra-velvety California blend. I have a soft spot for Ramey Claret. It was one of the first wines I really loved and it remains wonderfully accessible, but also delicious and well-balanced. Nose opens with chocolate-covered cherries. Pine tar and some spicebox hold up the rear. This is a high alcohol wine (14.5%) that manages to avoid being hot or a silly froot bomb. Soft, plush and round, it has notes of cherry, blackberry, cedar, tobacco, mocha, pencil shavings and a bit of herbs. Also notable that it's not overoaked -- tastes like it was aged in older barrels, or maybe french oak -- but does NOT have that icky American Oak Vanilla Flavor™. Lovely. Might have to buy another bottle.

This soft, easy-drinking Cabernet is a good introduction to the vintage, and while it will improve over the course of three to eight years, it is not a wine intended for long-term cellaring. – David Ramey VINEYARDS Appellation: Napa Valley Soil: Napa Valley soils are primarily comprised of broken down or decomposed rock that has been carried downhill from the eastern Vaca range and the western Mayacamas range into the base of the valley where they ultimately intermingle with the silt, clay and gravel deposits of the Napa River flood plain. Sites: This vintage’s blend is 54% Napa Valley, 14% St. Helena, 11% Napa-Carneros, 10% Oakville, 3% Mt. Veeder, 2% Diamond Mtn, 2% Oak Knoll, 2% Rutherford, 2% Sonoma Coast WINEMAKING Varietal Compositon: 70% Cabernet Sauvignon 24% Merlot 2% Malbec 2% Syrah 1% Cabernet Franc 1% Petit Verdot. Fermentation: Our Claret follows the Bordelaise model of blending different Bordeaux varietals. Malolactic fermentation is completed in barrel, and the blend is assembled early so they are “elevated” as the finished wine. Native-yeast barrel fermentation and full natural malolactic fermentation. Aging: The 2012 Claret aged for 12 months in 12% new French & American oak barrels (Demptos & Canton) and aged sur lies with monthly bâtonnage to coat the tannins and smoothly integrate the wood. . Tough-edged, with drying, gripping, chewy tannins that dominate the tight berry, cedar and herb flavors. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, Syrah, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2025. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 6,000 cases made.

Ramey has always done a good job with Cabernet Sauvignon. He produces 6,000 cases of his Claret, a lighter-styled, immediately drinkable red wine. The 2012 Claret is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot and the rest Malbec, Syrah, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Its dark ruby hue is accompanied by notes of cedarwood, roasted herbs, and red and blackcurrants in a flavorful, medium-bodied, elegant, surprisingly Bordeaux-like style. This supple red is ideal for drinking now and over the next 7–8 years.

The 2012 Claret appears to be another outstanding example of value-priced Cabernet Sauvignon. A 6,000-case blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot and the rest Malbec, Syrah, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, consumers will love this beauty because of its forward, classic Cabernet style. It should drink well for 5-8 years. - Robert Parker 90-92 Points (70% cabernet sauvignon, 24% merlot, 2% malbec, 2% syrah, 1% cabernet franc and 1% petit verdot): Vivid ruby. Expressive aromas of dark berry preserves, candied flowers, pipe tobacco and white pepper. Fleshy and open-knit, offering sweet blackcurrant and cherry compote flavors lifted and sharpened by juicy acidity. Supple tannins build slowly on the finish, which repeats the berry and tobacco notes. This soft, easy-drinking Cabernet is a good introduction to the vintage, and while it will improve over the course of three to eight years, it is not a wine intended for long-term cellaring. -David Ram...
