Ramey Chardonnay Russian River 2015

Winemaker's Notes:

"Ramey 2014 Chardonnay Russian River has an understated nose of ripe apples and apricots with a creamy/yeasty undercurrent. The medium-bodied palate provides nice richness, with plenty of pure stone fruit and citrusy flavors supported by refreshing acidity, finishing long and creamy." -Robert Parker, Wine Advocate *(90 Points)*

David Ramey started his career in wine with little more than a degree in enology and a dream. Then, after nearly two decades of creating benchmark wines for such California wineries as Matanzas Creek, Chalk Hill, Dominus and Rudd, David Ramey and his wife Carla founded Ramey Wine Cellars in 1996. “Owning one’s own winery is the dream of every winemaker,” David says, looking back on the path that led him to build his own. It took time, planning and a profound understanding of how best to bring together all the elements—from the grapes, to the winery materials, and a top-notch team of professionals—to make it all work. Ramey Wine Cellars is located off the town square in the quaint Sonoma County town of Healdsburg. It is a sleek, efficient, no-frills work space dedicated exclusively to making the highest quality wines possible. “In our own winery, we’re not distracted, as I had been, by the ongoing and changing needs of an employer,” David notes. “At Ramey Wine Cellars, we try to foster a team environment where everybody feels empowered to contribute and make a difference in both winery operations and the wine itself. My hope is to create an atmosphere of great opportunity for all.” The winery produces authentic, hand-crafted wines made in an Old World tradition--coupled with New World innovation and California terroir. Owned exclusively by David and his wife Carla, grapes are sourced from vineyards with which David has worked for many years. Their next project will be to purchase land and develop their own vineyards. Consistently rated among the best wines in California, the winery remains committed to Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Syrah as its primary varietals. Winery tastings are available by appointment. The 2012 Chardonnay Russian River (nearly 14,000 cases produced) reveals leesy notes in addition to wet pebbles, white peach, delicate pineapple and caramelized citrus. Medium to full-bodied and pure, it is best consumed over the next 2–3 years.

Hazy yellow color. Deeper in pitch than the Sonoma Coast bottling, displaying scents of poached pear, lemon curd and anise, with a nectarine quality building in the glass. Supple and broad on the palate, offering concentrated pit and orchard fruit flavors and a jolt of smoky minerals. Finishes with strong punch and length, leaving ripe pear and orange notes behind..

The buttery-styled 2011 Chardonnay Russian River exhibits more tropical fruit (mango and pineapple) and hints of hazelnut and smoky oak. Medium-bodied and crisp, it is slightly more evolved than the Sonoma Coast and thus should be consumed over the next 1–2 years.

Shows good intensity in a medium-bodied style, with citrus, green apple, white peach and nectarine notes. Subtle and delicate. Drink now.

Vivid gold. More exotic than the Sonoma Coast bottling, displaying scents of passion fruit, poached pear, honey and almond paste. Then surprisingly taut and focused on the palate, displaying fresh tangerine and tropical fruit flavors and a bracing kick of bitter quinine. Plays richness off of vivacity smoothly and finishes supple, spicy and very long, with an echo of ripe pear.

Full medium yellow. Somewhat exotic aromas of peach, melon, nuts and sulfides; reduced in a Burgundian way. Then bright on the palate but a bit youthfully hard-edged, with lemony acidity currently dominating the fruit. This needs 6 to 12 months to come into harmony.

Bright green-tinged yellow. Musky aromas of citrus skin, smoke, spices, flowers and minerals. Dry, cool, dense and brisk, with sappy citrus and fresh herbal flavors. A bit youthfully austere. Offers a very refreshing sugar/acid balance and excellent length. It is no easy trick to make 2,400 cases of chardonnay at this level of quality.
