Ramey Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2013

Winemaker's Notes:

92 points Antonio Galloni (Vinous): Another delicious wine, the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is a terrific example of the year. Creamy and beautifully layered on the palate, the 2013 captures all of the pedigree of this great vintage in a style that offers a bit more immediacy than many other wines. Best of all, the Cabernet Sauvignon is a remarkable value. Bright red stone fruit, mint, white flowers and tobacco add nuance on the silky yet powerful finish. Drink: 2018-2033. (Feb 2016)

Ramey Wine Cellars:
David Ramey started his career in wine with little more than a degree in enology and a dream. David Ramey started his career in wine with little more than a degree in enology and a dream. Then, after nearly two decades of creating benchmark wines for such California wineries as Matanzas Creek, Chalk Hill, Dominus and Rudd, David Ramey and his wife Carla founded Ramey Wine Cellars in 1996. “Owning one’s own winery is the dream of every winemaker,” David says, looking back on the path that led him to build his own. It took time, planning and a profound understanding of how best to bring together all the elements—from the grapes, to the winery materials, and a top-notch team of professionals—to make it all work. Ramey Wine Cellars is located off the town square in the quaint Sonoma County town of Healdsburg. It is a sleek, efficient, no-frills work space dedicated exclusively to making the highest quality wines possible. “In our own winery, we’re not distracted, as I had been, by the ongoing and changing needs of an employer,” David notes. “At Ramey Wine Cellars, we try to foster a team environment where everybody feels empowered to contribute and make a difference in both winery operations and the wine itself. My hope is to create an atmosphere of great opportunity for all.” The winery produces authentic, hand-crafted wines made in an Old World tradition--coupled with New World innovation and California terroir. Owned exclusively by David and his wife Carla, grapes are sourced from vineyards with which David has worked for many years. Their next project will be to purchase land and develop their own vineyards. Consistently rated among the best wines in California, the winery remains committed to Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Syrah as its primary varietals. Winery tastings are available by appointment. Dark, dark almost black and a bit murky looking in the glass. Very big, rich nose--oaky and somewhat raisiny. Very nice on the tip of the tongue. It seems to slide in without any taste sensation for a second or so. There is only a minimum of currant fruit flavor. Also, hint of a green pepper flavor. Fairly serious tannin with accompanying bitterness might put off some. US$44.99 at Wine Club in Santa Ana in 2008.

Deep purple opaque color that is consistent across the glass. Fairly volatile nose suggesting higher alcohol. On the tongue, though, there are no worries about alcoholic heat. Very moderate up-front fruit—some currant, something like prune, but very, very restrained. Very sedate tannin, nicely supportive acid. I enjoyed a bottle of this wine about a year and a half ago, and enjoyed it. I have to say the additional time in storage has been beneficial.

Ruby red in color. Perfumed and heady on the nose. Pure and clean on the palate, this has an upfront red fruited profile of red cherries and raspberries as well as some currants and kirsch. A beautiful lush texture with a slightly elevated but in control acid level. A big and chewy tannin level makes this a candidate for cellaring for at least 2 to 4 years. Slightly hot on the finish this is surely a youngster with promise. From a half bottle, and I will get some more.

Opaque ruby. Powerful, smoke-accented cherry and dark berry aromas are complicated by notes of dark chocolate and peppery spices. Rich yet lively, offering intense blackcurrant and bitter cherry flavors that gain sweetness with air. Closes broad and smooth, with gentle tannins and a seductively sweet dark berry quality.

Ramey’s 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon is a spherical wine with all of its elements in place. Mocha, espresso, blackberries, incense and graphite all come together in a wine that impresses for its exceptional overall balance. White flowers, cloves and asphalt all develop later, lending an element of exoticism that is simply compelling. The 2010 is a blend of valley floor and hillside fruit. Anticipated maturity: 2016–2030.

Opaque purple. Dark berries, cherry pit and chocolate on the nose, with licorice and black cardamon nuances adding complexity. Sappy, expansive blackcurrant and cherry flavors show very good depth, with a peppery quality providing lift. Fine-grained tannins add grip to the sweet, subtly floral finish. This suave wine drinks very well right now.

The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon is a big, dramatic wine endowed with tremendous richness and power. A large-scaled, dramatic wine, the 2009 Cabernet sweeps across the palate with generous, deeply resonant fruit. This is shaping up to be another beauty from David Ramey. The 2009 is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from Lamoreaux, DeSantis, J. Davies and Somerston. Anticipated maturity: 2014–2021.
