What to Expect

California's Napa Valley has been a source of world-class Cabernet Sauvignon for well over a century. Its warm climate and varied terrain allows for many styles of wine. One thread that runs through almost all the Cabernet based wines from Napa is their lush, ripe full-bodied feel and rich flavors of currant and berry. Wines from the valley floor, particularly around Rutherford, are famed for a dusty quality and those coming from the hillsides surrounding the valley, Mt. Veeder, Diamond Mountain and Howell Mountain for example, tend to be a little leaner with more obvious structural elements.

Winemakers Notes

Reviews

Rating: 93-95 - As reviewed by International Wine Cellar in Issue 132, May/June 2007 ($80) Dark purple. Remarkably spicy and vibrant on the nose, with powerful cassis, kirsch, espresso and rose pastille aromas and a subtle iron note. Intense red and dark fruit flavors are powered by vibrant minerality and framed by fine but solid tannins. Exotic spice notes come up on the long, stunningly sweet finish. "These vines are just coming into their majority," Ramey said.

Rating: 94/100 - As reviewed by Vinfolio This represents only the second release for Ramey from the excellent Larkmead Vineyard that possesses excellent drainage in the gravelly former riverbed on the valley floor north of St. Helena. The original winery, Larkmead was located here beginning in the 1880â??s. Comprised of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc, 7% Petite Verdot and 1% Malbec. Exotic coffee bean, black fruits: cherry and currant fill the nose. On the palate there are flavors of rich espresso, black currant, chocolate and spice. Beautiful texture, this wine is only going to get better. Drink 2009 - 2020.

David Ramey has created an expressive, rich Cabernet from the Larkmead vineyard, considered by many to be Napa's answer to Pauillac. This wine is packed with crème de cassis flavors and velvet tannins.
