Raina Sagrantino di Montefalco DOCG Umbria 2007

Member Review by GrahamSmithBernal:

I have just come from a tasting of this quite exceptional Sagrantino. Unusually for Sagrantino, this wine can be drunk young, but also has unquestionable potential to be laid down to be consumed in 10 to 20 years! This is a very boutique winery with just 6000 to 7000 sagrantino produced each year. The 2007 was quite extraordinary on the nose - a bouquet of violets and an overwhelming sweetness of candid fruits. The viscosity was dense and although this was a 15% alcohol wine but this was nicely balanced. An incredible mouthful of dark, berry fruit that had great length and continuity . This vineyard has only been producing wine since 2006 - and the 2007 was their second vintage. Because the vines were quite young the tanins were already soft and quite sweet but with obvious potential to evolve further. Quite outstanding!
