Raffaldini Vineyards Vermentino 2013

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

A touch sweet on the nose but with bright lemony fruit over a dusty, earthy hint of camphor. This is a bit soft in the mouth, with indistinct flavors of minerals, camphor and citrus pith. Lean and a bit spicy and firmly mineral on the finish, which does show good length. This wine lacks a mid-palate but shows promise both on the nose and the finish. 83 points

At Raffaldini Vineyards we provide an authentic Italian experience, complete with food, wine, art and hospitality. When you visit the vineyards you will experience a sense of being in Tuscany as you stroll the landscaped grounds that feature olive trees, roses, rosemary bushes, lavender; fig trees and much more. You will see original Italian artwork in our Tuscan-style villa which overlooks a traditional Italian piazza centered around a beautiful fountain, all against the backdrop of the Blue Ridge mountains. And then there is the wine. We focus on hand-crafting Italian-style wines using traditional vineyard and winemaking methods as practiced by the Raffaldini family centuries ago. Our goal is that when uncorked, a bottle of Raffaldini wine will evoke the Italian ideals of a slower pace of life and an emphasis on friends, family, great food and, of course, reflection. There is always something extra happening at Raffaldini Vineyards, from the Italian Festival to featuring an artist from Forli, Italy. Come and join La Famiglia Raffaldini for a complete Italian experience at Raffaldini Vineyards. Read less

Fairly nice North Carolina, Yadkin Valley Vermentino. Not too complicated with some nice notes of lemon cream, lemon drop and some not too ripe green pear. This has a short to medium finish and a decent amount of acidity.

Being a wine lover from the Carolinas, I've had a lot of North Carolina wine, and I must say that this is one of the best-if not THE best-NC white that I've tasted. I ordered two bottles on a hunch and was not disappointed. Mineral/lemon/asparagus nose with a nice crisp green apple flavor. Very well balanced, not overly acidic, in fact this wine has a smooth, long finish. Also as an aside, a bottle of this was given as a gift from President Obama to Italian President Giordio Napolitano as part of the G8 summit.

We tasted this wine at the Raffaldini vineyards on our tasting trip through the NC mountains November 07. It was my favorite white of the tasting and we bought a bottle. I opened and served it with a Corned Beef Brisket dinner and the flavors with the meat were wonderful.
