Rafael Palacios Godello Sabrego 2013

Member Review by vin0vin0:

Really nice Spanish white from the Godello grape. Ripe peach, melon, a hint of lemon and a touch of perfume on the nose and palate. Medium finish with a touch of viscosity.

Like a Viognier with a bit more spice. Grassy apple melds with apricot for a long, sweet acidic finish. Excellent value. Great experience with an underwing grape variety!

Bright yellow. Complex, perfumed bouquet evokes ripe pear and melon, along with floral and mineral nuances. Picks up a smoky quality with air and offers deep, smoky orchard fruit and lemon pith flavors. Closes creamy and long, with a jolt of tangy acidity that adds clarity and lift.

A joint project of importer Eric Solomon and Rafael Palacios, the 2012 Sabrego (100% Godello) is a lighter-weight Godello than those I tasted from importer Jorge Ordonez. Made from vines planted in decomposed granitic soils, tank-fermented, and aged on its lees for 3–4 months, it is an elegant white offering notes of wet stones, crisp grapefruit and green apple skins, light to medium body, and a refreshing, dry, mineral-laced style. It should be consumed over the next year.

The 2010 Sabrego is made from 100% Godello fermented and aged in stainless steel. White fruits, mineral, and spring flowers inform the nose of this spicy, concentrated effort. Nicely proportioned and smooth in the finish, it will provide enjoyment over the next 1–2 years.

Light gold. An aromatic nose is dominated by lanolin, dried flowers and citrus peel. Quite taut and energetic on the palate, with impressive cut to the lemon, spice and mineral flavors. The sappy, dry finish shows very good clarity and lingering spiciness. This energetic wine would be great with simply prepared shellfish.
