Raat's Family Chenin Blanc Original 2008
Editorial Reviews for Raat's Family Chenin Blanc Original
This pumps out wonderfully sweet and typical Chenin notes of candle wax, sweet golden fruit, honey, honeycomb, crayon, smoke, and lanolin. Very linear in the mouth with excellent balance and good energy that pushes the pure, lightly mineral-laced flavors of honeycomb, apple, lime leaf and steely pomegranate seed tones across the palate. The finish is very crisp and shows bright acids with less flesh than one finds on the palate, but it's just enough to keep the acids covered. 90pts
Yeasty nose, with lemon and grass shavings. The mouth is mildly acidic and fills out with oak pretty well. The aromas remain on the aftertaste. Pretty well balanced, not exciting, but good.
Rustic mealy nose. Slight bitterness. Overall the flavor is slightly green with lemons, grass, and a slight honey creamy finish. A bit on the bitter end but should round out nicely in time.
Clean, fresh...a stunning example of SA CB. Fragrance of citrus, apple flavour. Tried as recommended with spicy dishes...works well.

A crisp, unadorned style, with honeysuckle, white peach and mineral notes. The fresh, light-bodied finish has nice persistence. Drink now.
On the soft side, with pretty peach, lime, anise and fig notes, and an easy finish. Not big, but it has nice length, with the flavors showing persistence on the finish. Drink now.
Original Chenin celebrates wine at its most natural. Harvested separately from sandstone and granite soil in different pickings over the ripening period to enhance diversity of flavour, vinified separately according to their soil type. Crafted without oak to preserve all the "original" vibrant freshness. Exploding with succulent apple, pineapple, citrus and hints of ginger in the mouth, perfectly weighted with a crisp, mineral finish. This is Chenin Blanc to rival any other. An easy-to-pair wine since it has so has a wide flavour profile, but we especially recommend it with curry or similar spicy dishes as well as sushi and oysters
Scored 89 from Wine Spectator February 2010 and is included in the '17 Most Impressive White Wines' from the Cape region of South Africa that deliver consistency, diversity and value. Decanter Magazine December 2009 - chosen as one of the top 25 wines from South Africa2010 John Platter - 4 StarsHarpers Wine & Spirit UK (June 2009) - Rated Top 5 Chenins from South AfricaThe benchmark for Chenin Blanc from South Africa, this is the 4th consecutive vintage to score over 90 points in the Wine Spectator magazine. Grapes are sourced from old vines from three vineyards in Stellenbosch, all characterised by their complex soils. Somehow both rich and intense yet elegant and delicate on the palate. Honeyed pear, butterscotch, citrus flavours complemented by a firm minerality and spicy edge. A profound wine that changes perspectives.
