What to Expect

Chenin Blanc is one of the world's least-known and appreciated great white wine grapes. Originally from France's Loire Valley, Chenin Blanc has spread around the globe and is used for virtually all styles of white wine, from crisp and lean to rich, round full table wines, sparkling wines, and some of the most decadent dessert wines made. Classic descriptors for the flavors of Chenin Blanc include peach, honey, lanolin, marzipan, and quince jelly though the dry style from South Africa, where the wines are known as Steen, often exhibits more tropical fruit notes that recall pineapple and guava.

Winemakers Notes

Pale yellow with green flecks. Pineapple, peach and Golden Delicious apple flavours with crisp acidity and a lingering finish. This wine has not only done well in the Platter guide but also is Decanter''s top ten wines for under GBP15.

Reviews

Original Chenin is crafted without the use of any oak in order to preserve the wine's original, vibrant fesh fruit character. It's packed with succulent flavours of pineapple, golden delicious apple and citrus, with hints of ginger, honeysuckle and orange blossom and a lovely minerality. This bright, tasty offering from Chenin master Bruwer Raats rivals the finest Loire Valley Chenin. Really clean-cut, with white peach, honeysuckle and mineral notes that drive through the lengthy, well-defined finish. There's also great crunchy acidity buried here. Wine Spectator 89 Points

Medium acidity, very oily with some meatiness, typical of a Chenin Blanc. Less extreme than the traditional French Chenin's. Not bad. Its not my grape of choice (too funky), but this is toned down and more approachable.

Pale, slightly mineral with hints of grass and butter. It's not as crisp as I'd like light wines to be.
