R Mondavi Cab Reserve 375m 1997

Winemaker's Notes:

The vineyard-lots of grapes selected as reserve candidates receive special attention throughout winemaking and aging. We hand-harvested the grapes into small bins and brought them to the winery for destemming and light crushing. The wine was fermented with a combination of cultured and native yeasts for greater complexity. After an average of 32 days extended skin contact to naturally soften tannins and enhance varietal character, the wine was gently pressed and transferred to 60 gallon, chateau-style French oak barrels. In barrel, the wine completed an extended (70% native) malolactic fermentation for softness and depth. To achieve natural clarity, we gently racked the wine barrel-to-barrel five times during 17 ½ months of aging. The wine was bottled unfiltered to fully retain the vibrant aromas and rich, powerful flavors. (75% new French oak; balance once-used barrels.)

The Robert Mondavi Winery was founded in 1966 after a family split with the Charles Krug Winery, which had been founded by Robert’s father.  After heading out on his own, Robert settled on land in Napa valley, and in particular the famed To Kalon Vineyard in the Rutherford district. The original plot in To Kalon Vineyard was only 12 acres, but today there are 450 acres under vine. The Robert Mondavi Winery also includes the Wappo Hill Vineyard, which is a 400 acre plot in the Stags Leap District of Napa Valley. Within a year of its inception, the Robert Mondavi Winery proved to be a true pioneer, not only with the establishment of his winery but also by introducing and popularizing the use of French oak barrels for wine, European wine techniques, and the bottling of varietal wines. Robert Mondavi Winery only uses French Oak barrels for storing wine, and his influence and success led to the practice’s prevalence. Among Mondavi’s greatest successes one would have to count the creation of the Fume Blanc moniker for Sauvignon Blanc as well as the introduction of his benchmark Napa Valley Reserve Cabernet. Today Robert Mondavi’s legacy is carried on under the watchful eye of his wife who works with the current winemakers Genevieve Janssens, Gustavo Gonzalez, and Richard Arnold to ensure that today’s Robert Mondavi wines deliver the elegance, appeal, and character that Robert had intended. wonderful bottle - definitely time to drink if you have some... tobacco and chocolate overtones on a bordeaux -esque california cabernet. I was expecting more tanins - - they have definitely mellowed. Had with a filet which was a perfect match since it was so lean.

Leathery, licorise aroma. Good body, smooth tasty finish.

On the nose, the first thing I get is toasted oakiness, which I didn't very much enjoy. It was not too vibrant, but still was easy to pick. There are also some black fruits going on. Blackberry, a hint of blueberry, a hint of black licorice. There is also some heat coming through. There is also a hint of sweet tobacco! Midpalate, it is dry. It is very consistent to what I get on the nose. There are blackberrys and a hint of black licorice going on. Finish, this wine lingers in my mouth. It has a considerably pleasant long finish with some black fruits dancing on my palate and all over my mouth. It also has smooth and polished clean tannins. This is not a full-bodied bottle of wine. I would say medium to full bodied. It is well made and balanced and well put together. Bottled at 13.5%. However, I must disagree with RP (my favorite wine critic) when he scored this 95 pts. I am 91 on this effort. I really liked it. It is a sold bottle of wine, but 95 is way too high for this effort. Happy drinking!

drank at 10 year mark (2007). Still tannic. This wine will improve with even more age. Opened up at 1.5 hours decanting - very extracted and nice long finish. Problem with too much oak - very heavy-handed wine making

Dark reddish purple appearance. Moderately full-bodied. Highly extracted. Quite tannic. Cassis, black fruits, minerals. Somewhat meaty aromas. Well structured and proportioned with impressive tannins drying out the finish. Extracted flavors make for an assertive style that would benefit from some extra fleshiness onthe mid-palate.

As for the 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, this wine seems more subdued than it did last year and might be going through a relatively closed stage. As it sat in the glass, it took on an almost Ducru-Beaucaillou or Leoville-Las Cases St.-Julien-like character, with notes of minerals, cedar wood, black currants, tobacco, and spice. This is a rich, dark ruby/purple-colored wine with very complex aromatics, medium to full body, tight structure and plenty of tannin in the finish. There are 20,000 cases. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2025.

Deep ruby purple. Moderately full- bodied. Balanced acidity. Highly ex- tracted and oaked. Quite tannic. Black fruits, dusty cherries, dark chocolate. Intensely concentrated, with a rush of deep black fruit and powerful structural elements. Wood is nicely integerated. Lingering, mouth drying finish. A classic style.

Dark, ripe and intense, with a tight core of currant, mineral, earth and spice flavors. Turns dry and austere on the finish, where the flavors show more earthy qualities. Best to cellar into 1999.

An enormously complex and sophisticated wine that combines great flavors with uncommon finesse. Dark, sleek, rich and polished, it has a delicious core of concentrated cola, currant, plum and blackberry, and a tremendous finish. Best from 2004 through 2014. Tasted twice, with consistent notes.

The best Cabernet I've tasted in 35 years!

A superrich, polished, multifaceted wine, with layers of ripe currant, blackberry, herb, cedar and sage and a touch of pencil lead. Deep and concentrated, the flavors pour through on the finish, and while the tannins are chewy, the texture is supple. Best from 2005 through 2012.

Tasting Notes:

The 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve reflects both an exceptional vintage and extraordinary quality fruit from several highly acclaimed Napa Valley vineyards. These vineyards, because of outstanding clones, soils, microclimates and cultivation techniques, consistently produce wines with great complexity, structure and aging potential. The wine explodes with rich aromas of cassis, spice and cedar, with nuances of orange zest. The intense, powerful flavors have deep layers of cherry, cassis and berry, with broad, muscular tannins, and a velvety finish.

The vineyard-lots of grapes selected as reserve candidates receive special attention throughout winemaking and aging. We hand-harvested the grapes into small bins and brought them to the winery for destemming and light crushing.
