wonderful bottle - definitely time to drink if you have some... tobacco and chocolate overtones on a bordeaux -esque california cabernet. I was expecting more tanins - - they have definitely mellowed. Had with a filet which was a perfect match since it was so lean.
Leathery, licorise aroma. Good body, smooth tasty finish.
On the nose, the first thing I get is toasted oakiness, which I didn't very much enjoy. It was not too vibrant, but still was easy to pick. There are also some black fruits going on. Blackberry, a hint of blueberry, a hint of black licorice. There is also some heat coming through. There is also a hint of sweet tobacco! Midpalate, it is dry. It is very consistent to what I get on the nose. There are blackberrys and a hint of black licorice going on. Finish, this wine lingers in my mouth. It has a considerably pleasant long finish with some black fruits dancing on my palate and all over my mouth. It also has smooth and polished clean tannins. This is not a full-bodied bottle of wine. I would say medium to full bodied. It is well made and balanced and well put together. Bottled at 13.5%. However, I must disagree with RP (my favorite wine critic) when he scored this 95 pts. I am 91 on this effort. I really liked it. It is a sold bottle of wine, but 95 is way too high for this effort. Happy drinking!
drank at 10 year mark (2007). Still tannic. This wine will improve with even more age. Opened up at 1.5 hours decanting - very extracted and nice long finish. Problem with too much oak - very heavy-handed wine making
one of my favorite wines only thing i dislike is that my case is now empty
Great took long time to open then was great!

Very tight nose, with blackberry, coffee and cocoa notes, this is a big wine that shows great intensity and depth. quite closed now, the dark profile keeps its cards close to the vest. One thing for sure: this is definitely one for the cellar. The finish is lengthy, with brisk tannins as well as espresso and bitter-chocolate notes. Hold for eight to ten years; this wine should keep andrsquo;til 2020.
Packed with currant, black cherry, plum, cedar and spice nuances, finishing long and complete, this Mondavi reserve is a dark, immense, deeply concentrated and sharply focused red... Wine Spectator. A Cabernet Sauvignon wine from California in USA. 1997 Mondavi, Robert Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 750ml
A beautiful Cabernet, rich and soft and profoundly structured, showing near-perfect tannins. They melt in your mouth, yet retain firmness, and carry flavors of blackberries, black currants and cedar. Lacks the concentration of previous vintages, but is a lovely wine for now and over the next six years.
Genevieve Jannsens has been working with To Kalon fruit, on and off, since 1978. Her blend for Mondavi Reserve includes several of the oldest dry-farmed blocks in this historic vineyard, some dating to 1945. She sets out to make a wine of elegant power and intensity, and this 2005 is a triumph. It presents cabernet sauvignon as an aristocratic wine, with just enough supple richness to fill out the austere tannins. A hint of green herb and a gloss of cocoa integrated from the new oak add complexity as the profound, earthy flavors open and expand with air. A classic Napa Valley wine to age for ten years or more.
Good deep ruby-red. Currant, chocolate and tobacco on the nose. Silky, layered and lush, with a seamless texture to the full-bodied flavors of plum, currant and lead-pencil minerality. Has plenty of plump mid-palate fruit to support the big but thoroughly ripe tannins, which reach the front teeth. Mostly from To-Kalon fruit, the rest from nearby vines also in Oakville. Winemaker Janssens compared this wine to the 1995. This is sweet and approachable, whereas the 2005 version was young and aggressive at the same stage.
Tight, crisp and a touch flinty, with mineral, citrus, pear and melon flavors. Finishes with light oak and attractive fruit. Drink now through 2001.
Nutty and toasty, but balanced by melon, lemon and green-apple fruit. Tangy, with a mineral-herb element that keeps it interesting through the chalky finish.
The vineyard-lots of grapes selected as reserve candidates receive special attention throughout winemaking and aging. We hand-harvested the grapes into small bins and brought them to the winery for destemming and light crushing. The wine was fermented with a combination of cultured and native yeasts for greater complexity. After an average of 32 days extended skin contact to naturally soften tannins and enhance varietal character, the wine was gently pressed and transferred to 60 gallon, chateau-style French oak barrels. In barrel, the wine completed an extended (70% native) malolactic fermentation for softness and depth. To achieve natural clarity, we gently racked the wine barrel-to-barrel five times during 17 ½ months of aging. The wine was bottled unfiltered to fully retain the vibrant aromas and rich, powerful flavors. (75% new French oak; balance once-used barrels.)
The 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve reflects both an exceptional vintage and extraordinary quality fruit from several highly acclaimed Napa Valley vineyards. These vineyards, because of outstanding clones, soils, microclimates and cultivation techniques, consistently produce wines with great complexity, structure and aging potential. The wine explodes with rich aromas of cassis, spice and cedar, with nuances of orange zest. The intense, powerful flavors have deep layers of cherry, cassis and berry, with broad, muscular tannins, and a velvety finish.
Notes: 75% New French Oak Barrels
