R. López de Heredia Tempranillo Blend Rioja Reserva Viña Tondonia 2001
"The 2001 Vina Tondonia Reserva is bridled with a lovely nose of decayed red fruit, fireside hearth, a touch of mulberry and small red cherry. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, crisp red fruits (wild strawberry and cranberry) with a sharp, vibrant, tense, tannic finish that has immense precision. There is a slight saline note lingering in the mouth after the wine has (regretfully) departed. Drink now-2030+...95" WA 8/12 "Elegance and understatement are the classic hallmarks of fine Rioja, sustained in this estate-grown red from an exceptional vintage. The wine’s complexity begins in the light cranberry essence of its aroma, which deepens to cherries and adds zesty notes of orange peel as the flavors build in richness. Sleek and mature, this is the ultimate red for rack of lamb...93" W&S 12/12

Dark red. Penetrating, complex bouquet of red berries, cherry skin, minerals, dried rose, tobacco , cured meat and baking spices. Youthfully taut, but opens slowly to show deep cherry and plum flavors with suggestions of succulent herbs and graphite. This medium-bodied wine broadens on the back, the intensely flavored fruit softening and sweetening. A remarkably elegant, balanced and complex wine that's still very young : I'd give it at least another five years of bottle aging.
The 1998 Viña Tondonia Reserva is decidedly more flashy and opulent than the Bosconia in its heady suggestions of macerated cherries, licorice, menthol, tobacco, sweet oak and minerals. It offers wonderful purity and great length in a riper expression of Rioja that is more approachable today and hints at being slightly further along in its evolution than the Bosconia. Anticipated maturity: 2006-?
Medium red. Musky aromas of red currant, cherry, herbs and flowers, with a subtle mineral undertone adding lift. A medium-bodied wine with red fruit flavors complicated by sweet chewing tobacco, succulent herbs and exotic Indian spices. Gains sweetness and power on the long, sappy finish. This is delicious and pretty complex now, but has the balance to age.

A sophisticated nose of roasted vanilla and walnuts lead to velvety smooth, mellow, refined and elegant fruit that leaves a lasting impression of why Riojas are world-class wines.
Bright medium red. Expansive bouquet of musky red and dark berries, medicinal cherry, rose oil and Asian spices. Juicy raspberry and rose pastille flavors are framed by silky tannins and given a boost by zesty minerality. Packs a solid punch but comes off almost weightless. The tannins fade into the sweet fruit on the finish, which is strikingly pure and very persistent. Lovely right now.
Wonderful velvety texture, great depth of fruit, finely balanced, in the flush of youth but with a great future ahead, should you choose to age this wine.
