Dark red. Penetrating, complex bouquet of red berries, cherry skin, minerals, dried rose, tobacco , cured meat and baking spices. Youthfully taut, but opens slowly to show deep cherry and plum flavors with suggestions of succulent herbs and graphite. This medium-bodied wine broadens on the back, the intensely flavored fruit softening and sweetening. A remarkably elegant, balanced and complex wine that's still very young : I'd give it at least another five years of bottle aging.
Combine old vines, traditional winemaking and the stunning 2001 season - then wait nine years. What you end up with is a wine built in four dimensions, the power and density of fruit rounded by time, the graceful hand of the winemaker capturing the season in subtle scents of rose and cherry-skin tannin. Everything about the wine is gentle while remarkably long, set to develop for another nine years or more.
Austere and old-fashioned in style, this wine's color and aroma show some oxidation, while its fruit is lean and light. The flavors are mature and the black tannins have a gentle grip, ready to drink with prime rib.
Bright medium red. Expansive bouquet of musky red and dark berries, medicinal cherry, rose oil and Asian spices. Juicy raspberry and rose pastille flavors are framed by silky tannins and given a boost by zesty minerality. Packs a solid punch but comes off almost weightless. The tannins fade into the sweet fruit on the finish, which is strikingly pure and very persistent. Lovely right now.
Medium red. Musky aromas of red currant, cherry, herbs and flowers, with a subtle mineral undertone adding lift. A medium-bodied wine with red fruit flavors complicated by sweet chewing tobacco, succulent herbs and exotic Indian spices. Gains sweetness and power on the long, sappy finish. This is delicious and pretty complex now, but has the balance to age.
This polished red delivers mature flavors of dried cherry, forest floor, tobacco and vanilla on a graceful frame. Fresh and lively. Drink now.
The 1998 Viña Tondonia Reserva is decidedly more flashy and opulent than the Bosconia in its heady suggestions of macerated cherries, licorice, menthol, tobacco, sweet oak and minerals. It offers wonderful purity and great length in a riper expression of Rioja that is more approachable today and hints at being slightly further along in its evolution than the Bosconia. Anticipated maturity: 2006-?
