R. López de Heredia Tempranillo Blend Rioja Gran Reserva Viña Bosconia 2001
Earthy and funky at first with eggshell and soil notes, this blossoms slowly with raspberry and wild strawberry tones accented with dried citron peel. Light and fresh in the mouth, this shows some nutty oak up front before laying down a pure, crisp mid-palate replete with crystal clear raspberry fruit. This is high acid without being acidic and displays rare elegance and finesse with its soft and rich yet bright mouthfeel. 93ptsAdd winemaker's notes

The lovely wild cherry fruit on the nose is gently dusted with warm cinnamon spice and dried floral tones that are backed up by a touch of green tea and a musky, gamy note. Pristine and transparent in the mouth with bright, zesty acids that accentuate the raspberry fruit and balance the earthy, leathery notes that frame the fruit. Turns a touch dry on the finish with good resonance and a developing gamy edge. Love this fine blend of fruit and game. Drink 2009-2020 93pts
Opening with an herbal funky edge this gains a green citrus oil element then fermenting tobacco tones and a touch of nut oil sets off the black plum fruit. This is a little leathery with perhaps a touch of brett lurking. In the mouth this is round and rich yet with out the fine balance of the 1970 Tondonia, It comes off as a bit rustic in tonight's company with rich black currant and black raspberry fruit that has a touch of stemminess. The finish tapers off quickly leaving a bit of drying tannin and a tarry finale. Better on the nose but still quite good. 91pts
This has a fantastic nose with sweet plums, toasted spices popping in a hot cast iron skillet, coffee tones and an enchanting candied violet/rose tone. The wine moves through stages alternately gaining a more roasted, caramelly tone and then reverting to cinnamon and tobacco spice dried raspberry, either way it smells great. In the mouth it is rich with resolved tannins and bright acidity offering up a rather Burgundian feel. There is a minty, herbal top note up front then a precise and transparent mid-palate with great mineral cut that retains a cherried core of fruit with a distinct watermelon edge but his lacks just a bit of intensity and length, especially on the finish. Still very good and wonderful to smell. 91pts
This opens with very bad bottle stink, all sour and dirty game. With ari this settles into a fine leather, earth groove with occasional flashes of fine, crystalized raspberry fruit and nuanced tones of coffee cream and menthol. Bright and flesh with decidedly dark fruit that veers into the black cherry realm. There is a lovely background note of herb and powdered minerals that helps support the pool of slightly candied fruit that gains freshness on the finish but this is a bit frail and fairs poorly with food. 89pts

This is the newly released vintage of Lopez de Heredia's "young" white wine. In the flush of youth, it is ready to drink, but of course shows the complexity of the slow, gentle aging process this house is famous for.

An age-worthy red from a stellar vintage for Rioja, this fresh red is bursting with dried berry aromas and hints of vanilla. The palate is rich, yet light with smooth, developed tannins.
Proceeding to the Bosconia vineyard in El Boseque, the 1991 Vina Bosconia Gran Reserva spent ten years in barrel and has a lucid deep ruby core with a tawny rim. It is endowed with a sensual bouquet with red cherry, fresh fig, cola and a touch of thyme. The palate is medium-bodied with a smooth, velvety texture, perfect acidity and lovely, natural peppery dark cherry fruit laced with balsamic and white pepper. This is simply divine. This mature red shows a light brick color, with delicate aromas of spice, dried fruit and rose. Supple and still lively, offering flavors of dried berry, tea, vanilla and spice. This whispers rather than shouts, but has distinctive character. For fans of the traditional style. Drink now.
As always, a red for elegant and refined. A lovely accompaniment with roasted, highly flavored meats such as suckling pig, this aged red is round and smooth with a long-lingering flavor on the palate.
Amber-edged, fading red. Compelling bouquet of dried red fruits, rose, lavender, anise and gingerbread. Deep, velvety red fruit flavors are surprisingly lithe, with candied floral and licorice qualities contributing complexity. Gains sweetness with air and finishes long, with strong mineral and floral qualities. For this much complexity in an aged Burgundy, youandrsquo;d likely pay twice as much.
