On first opening the nose is sandal wood and light red berries. The palate is cherries and some licorice and anis lurking in the background ending with a sweet dry cherry finish. With air the nose takes on character of cinnamon mole, hints of chocolate and ripe red berries. The palate shows some light red berry, coffee and menthol with a slight dry cedar finish.

Deeeeeeeeelish! Ripe fruit. Maybe even a little over ripe, raisiny, pruney nose but balanced with some nice grape tannins and spice. This went well with my gnocchi but could easily handle a steak. This is some HEAVY Jesus Juice. I like.

The nose seems a little advanced but with Plum, beef stock, Caramel, vanilla and a bit of charred wood. On the palate it shows cranberry fruit with rose petals and minerally earth. A medium bodied wine that seems really tight right now with a lot of acidity. It seems to shut down your palate a bit and didn't go very well with the food on this night.

Cubillo is Lopez’s answer to Rioja Crianza. Following the style of all their wines, this wine could be labeled a class above - as a Reserva - but they keep it a Crianza. It compares to most other Rioja wineries’ Reservas since the wine is aged for three years in oak, followed by another two to three years in bottle. The resulting wine is fruit-forward but with very developed, older-wine aromas of cherries and spices.

Clear, bright ruby. The nose is fresh with a slight aroma of licorice with consistent texture and persistent aroma. Smooth, fresh and persistent.

This wine pairs nicely with Queso de la Serena, a gooey, pungent, raw Merino sheep's milk cheese available online at Murray's Cheese.

One of the youngest wines coming out of the Lopez de Heredia cellars, this Rioja sees 2 years in oak and 2 years in bottle before being released. Made from 75% Tempranillo and 25% Grenache, the "Cubillo" is a single vineyard, showing fresh red fruit with underlying notes of toasted coffee bean and earth.

Winemaker's Notes:

"This comes from the López de Heredia family’s Cubillas vineyard, 59 acres of vines averaging 40 years of age, two-thirds of which are tempranillo, the balance planted to garnacha, mazuelo and graciano. They designate this vineyard’s wine as a Crianza, though it has the grandeur and elegance that takes it to a higher level. The lush fruit has scents of tart raspberries and sweet cherry compote, while a prickle of spice keeps it lean and classical in structure. That spiciness brings chorizo to mind, with which this would be delicious...93" W&S 12/12 "The 2005 Cubillo Tinto Crianza has a wonderful bouquet with leathery red fruit augmented by subtle hints of undergrowth, tobacco and a touch of spice. The palate is medium-bodied with a bit of piquancy on the entry. The acidity is quite sharp and it is missing a little flesh and weight towards the tensile finish...91" WA 8/12

Made from 65% Tempranillo, 25% Grenache, and 10% Mazuelo and Graciano, this dry Spanish is aged 3 years in barrels before being bottled.
