Editorial Reviews for R. Lopez de Heredia Rioja Viña Cubillo
This opens with just a touch of an acetic tone then turns layered with an earthy, leathery core of jellied raspberry fruit with a touch of vanilla and high tones of pepper, cedar, and a brisk saline note. With airing this gains nuanced floral and star anise tones as well as a smoky top note. In the mouth this is really bright with zesty, mouth cleansing acids framing slightly spicy yet intense strawberry fruit. There is an edge of Burgundian funk adding complexity on the lovely medium bodied mid-palate and a glassy mineral note pops out on the backend leading to a medium length finish with brisk strawberry and pomegranate tones. This would be killer with a fine Paella Valenciana! 89pts
Floral, red fruit nose. The palate is bright with some black pepper and spice. Holds a lot of juicy red fruit, mostly strawberries. Quite an interesting wine.
This beautiful wine manages richness of raspberry flavors and delicacy in the palate, with a sharp butter and pepper finish.
Extremely smooth and slick. A bit of a tang on the finish. A little mineral watery, but pleasant. Thin tasting without a lot of body, but tastes well made.
Light on the nose, but with an interesting chemical quality thats barely present. Aged and mellowing, retaining high acidity. Its very mineral - like sucking on a small pebble (the acidity makes the mouth water which helps with this analogy). Fairly meaty and earthy.
The nose is funky with forest floor, mushrooms and some sour minerality all mixed together with rose petals, smoke and some light red licorice. The palate is a bit more straight forward (how could it not be?) with a sour strawberry and cedar tartness. As the wine breathes and warms up it starts conjuring up images of Pinot Noir. Very interesting wine.
One of my favorite rosés of all time. Gorgeous, different, beautifully oxidized (the Riojanas call it "nobel oxidation"). Food friendly. Where I am (Sweden) the 2000 has sold out and the next rosé vintage is 2006 which will be released in 2016 so if I were you I'd grab one while they last.
Since my Dec 08 review I've tried some old barolos, and this shares some of their round fungal acidic traits, but with more of an acidic greeting. Sublimely mellow and loud at the same time. With each sip I taste something new, but I'll be damned if I can name them all.

This wine has evolved perfectly showing a deep ruby colour with shades of orange. Its nose is persistent, full bodied and showing a lot of mature fruit, being dominated by the Tempranillo grape. Its taste is round, smooth, fresh, full of body and persistent (Lopez Heredia).
Berry, spicy, leaf, vanilla and orange peel notes mingle in this lively red. It’s light-bodied, yet has good grip and bright acidity. Expressive, clean and refreshing, in the traditional style. Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graziano and Mazuelo. Drink now through 2010.
Coming from the family-run and very traditional Lopez de Heredia estate, this wine has notes of strawberry, blood orange, pomegranate, coconut, and exotic spices. Vi¤a Bosconia is produced from the juice of Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo, and Graciano, aged for three years in American oak barrels. The winery is one of the few in Rioja still owned by its founding family.
In the style of the house, this wine is light in body and mature in tone, with persistent and complex flavor. The color shows touches of oxidation, as does the initial aromas. But if you stay with the wine, earthy cherry flavors come up, minerality develops, and the mellow power only seems to gain focus. Decant this for roast pheasant with chanterelles.
This rosado has a copper-orange color with gold at the rim and red at the core. The nose is a mesmerizing, ever-changing mosaic of orange, cinnamon, tobacco, and stones. On the palate it shows complex flavors of apricot, pomegranate, cinnamon, butterscotch, and cloves, then becomes delicate and ethereal on the finish.
Auge: tiefes Rot; Nase: elegant, schöne Mischung von Kassis, Sauerkirsche, Vanillenoten, Tabak, Pfeffer; Gaumen: samtig, angenehm, fleischig, voluminös. Intensive Aromen von Sabayone, roten Früchten, Lakritze, gewürztem Brot, Klette und wilden Wachholderbeeren.
