Deep, tawny color. Singed orange, cherry skin, toffee and marzipan on the nose. Broad, deeply concentrated burnt citrus and pit fruit flavors are complicated by brown sugar and orange peel, with exotic baking spice and floral qualities on the back end. This refuses to let go of the palate, finishing with excellent clarity, thrust and sticky persistence.

Rutherglen is ground zero for one of Australiaandrsquo;s great treasures, old fortified Muscats and Tokays (actually Muscadelle), and Bullerandrsquo;s offerings are brilliant examples of these wines. The Calliope Rare Muscat boasts a deep, dark amber color as well as layers of flavor and constantly changing aromatics of brown sugar, fig, molasses, and Lord knows what else. It is an extraordinary beverage. These Australian treasures are fabulous to drink at the end of a meal. Moreover, once opened, they will hold for several weeks, sometimes longer.

The N.V. Calliope Muscat is dark amber-colored with aromas, and flavors of figs, dates, prunes, and maple syrup. The wine is amazingly fresh and well-defined with a finish that goes on and on.

Giving aromas of dark brown sugar, black strap molasses, licorice and preserved walnuts, the deeply brown colored NV Calliope Rare Muscat is again incredibly sweet and viscous with a good amount of acid to balance and is decadently rich and nutty/spicy in the very long finish. All these vintage blended fortified wines are bottled to drink now and though are stable enough to hold, they are not designed to improve with cellaring.

Buller, who has long been a supplier of fortified wines to the big Yalumba Company, has begun bottling under his own label, and, luckily for Americans, they have been picked up by a USA importer. The Tokay Calliope and Muscat Calliope are pure perfection. Both are amber-colored nectars with extraordinary perfumes, incredible richness, and finishes that linger on the palate, seemingly forever. At $50, they are a steal. The average age for the Calliope offerings is around 50 years of age. Australia continues to be a treasure trove for fortified, after-dinner wines. Once bottled, they do not change, and often age up to a decade where well stored. After opening, most will last for a week. This is one of the top wine discoveries of this yearandrsquo;s tastings. Many consumers are going to be overjoyed with these offerings.

The Calliope Rare Muscatandrsquo;s light amber color is followed by an intoxicating fragrance that includes scents of prunes, figs, maple syrup, molasses, and gobs of fruit. The glycerin is extraordinary, the acid level provides freshness and definition, and the finish lasts over a minute.
