External Reviews for R.H. Phillips Toasted Head Cabernet Sauvignon
Look for a bouquet of cherry and blackberry fruit, with notes of chocolate, leather, roasted coffee, and sweet oak. The tannins are mouth filling but soft, with a hint of smoke.
A straightforward Cabernet, with good varietal character. Dry and balanced; shows blackberry, cassis and oak flavors, with a rough, briary finish that turns chocolaty.
The latest incarnation of the famous, fire-breathing bear is what you'd expect: richly focused on its cassis and dark cherry flavors, with that hallmark creamy, mocha-scented oak wrapping the rich fruit in a velvety, fine-grained warmth.
While the brand was named after the practice of toasting the barrel heads and staves during the coopering process, it may also provide a glimpse of the toasty flavors that 18 months of aging in American oak barrels (20% new wood) imparts. Also detected are notes of chocolate and coffee. The blending of 12% Petit Verdot provides rich tannins for excellent aging potential.
Aging in barrels made of wood that has been toasted gives the Toasted Head line of products from producer R.H. Phillips a unique flavor. Notes of blackberries and dried cherries lead the path and melt into a soft chocolate-covered espresso bean flavor with light leather and earthy undertones.
