Qupe Syrah Bien Nacido Vineyard 2011

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Lovely nose, faintly animal, olive, gamy, leathery, and spicy with hints of green peppercorn on the nose. Somewhat light and elegant up front then picking up a faint edge of sweetness with just a hint of ashiness. This has a lovely texture with fine grained tannins, poppy seed accents to the slightly gamy bright red raspberry and loganberry fruit, and a very clean and fresh finish with small angular tannins. This is a lovely bistro styled syrah, it's just a little short at this point, but offers a superb blend of drinkability, variety character and subtle complexity in this style. 88pts

Qupé is dedicated to producing handcrafted Rhône varietals and Chardonnay from California’s Central Coast. We employ traditional winemaking techniques to make wines that are true to type and speak of their vineyard sources. Our goal is to make wines with impeccable balance that can be enjoyed in their youth, yet because of the good acidity from cool vineyard sites can also benefit from ageing. We are committed to sourcing grapes from some of the best and most prestigious vineyards in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties. Qupé Wine Cellars is located on the Bien Nacido Vineyard in Santa Maria, California. Qupé shares a production facility with Jim Clendenen from Au Bon Climat, and together they have a production and sales support staff. Jim Adelman is the General Manager and also shares winemaking duties. Once a year, during harvest, visiting winemakers and wine professionals with various backgrounds (many from different states and countries) in the wine business come to work with Bob and Jim at the winery to share techniques and ideas. Focusing on fruit grown in the Central Coast Appellation of California, Qupé produces Rhone varietals and Chardonnay. A majority of Qupé’s wines (about 50%) are made from grapes grown on the Bien Nacido Vineyard, where the Syrah and Chardonnay are planted and grown to Bob’s specifications. In addition to Bien Nacido, Qupé also farms (using organic practices) a 14 acre vineyard in Los Olivos called “Ibarra-Young Vineyard.” The balance of the Qupé wines are made from grapes grown at various vineyards in the Central Coast appellation of California. Bob and his wife Louisa have recently purchased an 80 acre vineyard site in the Edna Valley which they began planting in the spring of 2005. This vineyard will be developed and farmed under the rigorous principles of Biodynamic Farming. Read less

Rich red and black fruit on the nose with smoke, pepper and graphite. Flavors of ground black pepper, chocolate and blackberry. Zesty herbs and nice minerality. Lingers nicely. 90 pts. 9/2/12 at tasting room

Y'know, this one may be the reasons that a lot of people don't care for Central Coast Syrahs. In the initial tastes, it has a lot of "viney" flavor that is going to turn off a lot of people. Then you get a sour taste--and not the nice acid tartness that I like to get--a "this is just too old" sourness. After a few minutes (of air or me adapting?) you start to get some berry fruit. However, this still does not seem to be a very sophisticated, complex wine to seek out. US$19.99 at Total Wine in 2010.

Pretty safe picking anything from Bien Nacido's vineyards, and this certainly does not disappoint!

Bright purple. Blackberry and cassis scents are complicated by notes of game, black pepper and bitter chocolate. Spicy dark fruit flavors show good concentration and focus, with zesty acidity adding spine. Finishes with good cut, length and linger... Stephen Tanzers IWC. Wine Tasting NotesThis is a classic vintage of Bien Nacido Syrah structured, balanced, spicy with persistent fruit. The aromas show typical cool climate character of white and black pepper, thyme and dried raspberries. Tannins are moderated by rich fruit and spices with the kind of refreshing acidity that makes you want more. This ranks among our best ever and will age nicely for 10-15 years.

Built more on acid than on tannin, this is a light-bodied, easy-to-drink Syrah that shows all of the requisite varietal characteristics: smoke, meat and pepper alongside crisp red berry flavors. Nicely complex; an intellectual wine rather than a hedonistic one.
