Qupé Grenache Santa Ynez Valley Purisima Mountain Vineyard 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

This wine is 100% Syrah from the Bien Nacido Vineyard in the Santa Maria Valley in the very northern reaches of Santa Barbara County. It comes from two distinct blocks at Bien Nacido: 54% from Block Eleven “Baja,” a hillside planted in 1997, and 46% from the X Block, planter to Riesling in 1973 - grafted to Syrah in 1986. The X Block is out oldest Syrah block at Bien Nacido and is now being farmed using biodynamic practices. Syrah at Bien Nacido was as good, if not better, in 2006 than in the excellent year of 2005. The cool vintage yielded a very fragrant and spicy Syrah with lots of black and white pepper, lavender and deep berry fruit. This wine has plenty of depth and body but with a sleek, crisp mouthfeel that makes you keep wanting more.

Rich red berry aromas along with acai, blueberry and some black pepper notes. Some purple plummy notes on the nose as well. This wine has a sexy texture I really enjoy with powerful flavors without the mouth-blowing tannin, high acid and high alcohol feel. It's a pretty, more feminine style Syrah with finesse, rich berry fruit covering red, blue and purple with even some black fruit tones and wonderful balance. Some slight herbal qualities and pepper appear on the mid palate. It finishes pure and long. Very nice! Why I brought this home from the tasting room in Los Olivos! 93 pts.

Pretty nose filled with floral notes, lavender and red berry. Powerful and dense yet pretty in its flavor profile and delicacy of fruit. Complex with red berry fruit with leather, cedar, cherry and blackberry. Great layers! Cocoa finish. Beautiful wine! 95 pts. 9/2/12 at tasting room
