Qupe Central Coast Syrah 2005
Notes on the Qupe Central Coast Syrah 2005 : WINEMAKER NOTES: This is an outstanding bottling of our Central Coast Syrah, ranking alongside the 1991, 1994, 1998 and 2003. The cool climate Santa Barbara and Arroyo Grande fruit give the wine the whole range of spice characters, nicely offset by the forward, rich fruit character of warmer Paso Robles. The alcohol comes in just under 14%, which I'm very happy about. Sure, this wine will age beautifully, but what's the point? Drink it with pleasure over the next couple years and save your cellar space for more important wines.QUPE CENTRAL COAST SYRAH 2005
One of my faves, this is the ticket if you like big fruity wines. Hints of spice and a floral aroma but otherwise a pretty soft and easy drinker. A great Syrah for under $20. Actually, it's not just Syrah, it's 84% Syrah, 6% Grenache, 4% Counoise, 3% Mourvedre and a bit of Mondeuse, Cinsault, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Tempranillo.
This is a fruit forward and sometimes jammy tasting goody. It's fun to drink and I like it with or without food. In my experience, it's not the easiest wine to match with the foods I'm eating, but it still it great to drink on its own.
Piercingly hot nose on this one. The flavors are of brown spice, leather and oak. It's jammy, but not in a bad way, with dark fruit flavors. Color has a pleasant garnet rim to it.
Really well balanced, smooth fruity and earthy tones, that slight buttery finish that makes me want to down the whole bottle. This wine is freakin delicious, and a good buy for the price.
Nice light earthiness, decent syrah fleshiness, but not overpowering. A touch hot on the nose and in the mouth, so let stand for a while. Long finish on the spiciness of the syrah with some oak to add body. Good.
Dark red. Tight. Not very complex. Bitter fruit, mild tannin, no finish
Deep, not drowning though. Notes of flowers and oranges take me back to Hawaii. Will seek another bottle, maybe different vintage, to store away.

This is a tasty and aromatic Syrah from Rhône-grape specialist Qupé. This medium-bodied wine boasts classic Syrah flavors: black fruit with a touch of black pepper.
Long time Rhone Ranger vintner, Bob Lindquist of Qupé Wine Cellars, has been at theforefront of experimentation with Rhone varietals in California. Over a decade ago, he hit uponthe idea of combining Viognier with Chardonnay; while the percentage of each varietal in theblend has changed over the years, in recent vintages he’s settled on an even amount of each. As tasty as this combo is, it’s a wonder that more Rhone style oriented winemakers haven’tproduced this unusual white wine blend. Perhaps Lindquist has just found the right vineyard sitesin Santa Maria Valley that really make it work in the bottle. The 2005 version has incredible aromatics with white florals, citrus, ripe peach and asense of minerality apparent. The flavors are equally compelling with citrus, apricot, pear, pineapple, peach skins as well as delicate florals and an undertone of wet stones. It really doeshave that much going on and it’s all going on in harmony on the palate; like a diamond withmany facets, this blend easily reveals multi-dimensional flavors. The texture is silky and richwith just the right weight on the palate, while a finely honed spark of acidity on the finish keepsthings fresh and lively, inviting another sip. And here’s the real deal: all this deliciousness for only $18. These days, it’s hard to find apremium Chard for that price and you sure as heck aren’t going to find a top Viognier for thattariff. Here you get ‘em both, in a unique combo, for one low priced admission.
