Quintessa Red Bordeaux Blend Rutherford 2004

Winemaker's Notes:

Harvest Dates: September 9 - October 1, 2004 Skin contact: 30 days Time in oak: 18 months Oak Regime: 100% French oak from diverse forests north of the Loire River with emphasis on tight grain. Release Date: June 2007 "Due to a very concentrated vintage, the 2004 Quintessa takes a departure into the realm of power, allthe while maintaining the finesse and elegance that have been the signature of the wine from the Quintessa Estate since its inception. An opaque jet black robe leads to a bold attack, transitioning into a weighty layered mid-palette of infinite complexity. The finish is supple and round with good length and exquisitely forged tannins."

THE ESTATE "In 1989, Valeria and I found the property that would become Quintessa, a remarkable estate in the heart of the renowned Rutherford appellation of Napa Valley. With 280 acres, it was the last great undeveloped property in Napa Valley and had all the characteristics of a great wine estate: rolling hills, many different microclimates and a vast diversity of soil types. Now with nearly fifteen years of growth, the vines have lost their youthful exuberance and have developed into a balanced vineyard that needs little manipulation to produce low yields and concentrated flavors." Agustin Huneeus Vintner/Proprietor The Vineyard's Diversity Defines Quintessa "The fact that the property at Quintessa had never been planted to grapes before spoke to the vivacity of the soil and the absence of grape pests. But it was amazing the diversity of the land that convinced us of Quintessa's potential to be one of the truly great wine estates of the world. The estate includes a valley, a lake, a river, five hills, four microclimates and numerous different soil types. Few vineyards anywhere encompass such diversity." Valeria Huneeus Vineyard Master/Proprietor THE WINE "Quintessa, like all classic wines of the world, bears the same name as the vineyard from which it is made. Our goal is to produce the best expression of this extraordinary vineyard each year. In broad terms, Quintessa is a red meritage wine. The vineyard's diversity provides us wide stylistic options for the wine. Fruit from each component block of Quintessa is harvested, sorted, then gravity fed into either oak or stainless steel fermentation tanks. Once fermentation and maceration are complete, each block wine is aged separately for up to two years in french oak barrels in our caves. After this ageing period the components are brought together and the final Quintessa blend is created. The wine is then bottled and laid down for yet another year before release. Although each vintage is unique, we have discovered that finesse and elegance best express the character of the vineyard and as such, we blend for harmony, balance, and length of flavors. Above all, our objective is to make Quintessa a delicious wine that is complementary to food." Agustin Huneeus Vintner/Proprietor Read less

I would pay serious money just to SMELL this wine, let alone drink it! The first time I tried it, it took me ten minutes of swirling and sniffing before I allowed myself to taste it. I was overwhelmed by the complexity and beauty of the nose - couldn't get enough of it. One of the best wines I have come across. Elegant, complexity in flavor and aromas - extremely BIG, yet balanced. The finish lingers for a minute and longer. Chip in with some friends and buy a bottle - It's fantastic!

After an hour in decanter this wine showed a dark shroud of rich black currant jam with vanillin oak, gram cracker crust and a bit of detectable heat. On the palate, this wine showcased a velvety full body with dark black fruits, allspice and molasses which led to a slightly bitter finish that stayed fresh on the palate for an easy minute with blackberry fruit.

The nose was dark and seductive with black chocolate covered cherries, candied orange, mocha, vanilla and cola. On the palate, I found black currant and dark chocolate in a wave of mouth coating and seductive fruit. A hint of tannin lingered into its long finish. I could see this wine hitting its pinnacle in another year or two.

Gorgeous! Combines concentration with depth and layers of fruit, spice, earth and suppleness.

Appealing for its caressing fruit and supple tannins. Lets the currant- and anise-laced flavors glide across the palate, offering good depth and ending with a complex, persistent finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Dr... Wine Spectator. A Proprietary Blend wine from California in USA. 2004 Quintessa Proprietary Red Wine 750ml
