Quintessa Red Bordeaux Blend Rutherford 2002

Winemaker's Notes:

Harvest Dates: September 16, 2002 - October 5, 2002 Skin contact: 30 days Time in oak: 20 months Type of oak: 100% New, French oak from diverse forests north of the Loire River;emphasis on tight grain wood. Release date: September 1, 2005 The bouquet of this wine is a rich mélange of floral and black fruits. A delicate brush stroke from Titian, the accent is on opulence tempered by finesse. A bold attack, that astonishes with its richness, and then a seamless segue to an ultra ripe, integrated and well textured mid-palette. A brooding monolithic mass of bold velvet robed tannins, the assurance of graceful aging leading to a finish that lingers and flirts endlessly. The paragon of the Quintessa Vineyard.

THE ESTATE "In 1989, Valeria and I found the property that would become Quintessa, a remarkable estate in the heart of the renowned Rutherford appellation of Napa Valley. With 280 acres, it was the last great undeveloped property in Napa Valley and had all the characteristics of a great wine estate: rolling hills, many different microclimates and a vast diversity of soil types. Now with nearly fifteen years of growth, the vines have lost their youthful exuberance and have developed into a balanced vineyard that needs little manipulation to produce low yields and concentrated flavors." Agustin Huneeus Vintner/Proprietor The Vineyard's Diversity Defines Quintessa "The fact that the property at Quintessa had never been planted to grapes before spoke to the vivacity of the soil and the absence of grape pests. But it was amazing the diversity of the land that convinced us of Quintessa's potential to be one of the truly great wine estates of the world. The estate includes a valley, a lake, a river, five hills, four microclimates and numerous different soil types. Few vineyards anywhere encompass such diversity." Valeria Huneeus Vineyard Master/Proprietor THE WINE "Quintessa, like all classic wines of the world, bears the same name as the vineyard from which it is made. Our goal is to produce the best expression of this extraordinary vineyard each year. In broad terms, Quintessa is a red meritage wine. The vineyard's diversity provides us wide stylistic options for the wine. Fruit from each component block of Quintessa is harvested, sorted, then gravity fed into either oak or stainless steel fermentation tanks. Once fermentation and maceration are complete, each block wine is aged separately for up to two years in french oak barrels in our caves. After this ageing period the components are brought together and the final Quintessa blend is created. The wine is then bottled and laid down for yet another year before release. Although each vintage is unique, we have discovered that finesse and elegance best express the character of the vineyard and as such, we blend for harmony, balance, and length of flavors. Above all, our objective is to make Quintessa a delicious wine that is complementary to food." Agustin Huneeus Vintner/Proprietor Read less

The color was super dark. The nose reminded me of Bordeaux. It had some cassis, and blackberry. The palate showed a medium to heavy weight wine with elagant multilayered fruit profile that is somewhat quiet it it's approach, but constantly delivers the goods. Tar, anise, leather, cocoa, and cassis wrapped around clean and intricate tannins.... All this with a cherry on top! (black cherry that is). I like this ones peigree. A long finish and I was seeking out the decanter for more.

This is my second time tasting. Consistent notes. Bordeaux like. Smooth intergrated tannins. Nice weight. Deep complex fruit of dark berries. Cassis. Understated oak. Long 30 aftertaste. This is the best Quintessa I have ever had. Not quite sure its worth $100.

An elegant, polished red, with a complex and neatly focused beam of currant, black cherry, spice and light, toasty oak, ending in a long, rich finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Best from 2000 through 2006. 2,000 cases made. (JL) Wine Spectator. A Proprietary Blend wine from California in USA. 1995 Quintessa Proprietary Red Wine 1500ml
