Quintessa Red Blend 2015

External Review:

The flagship wine of the Huneeus Family of Napa Valley, Quintessa is a blend of Bordeaux variety grapes from their estate vineyard right in Napa's Rutherford Bench region. This 2010 boasts many 90+ scores including Robert Parker who gave it 93 saying "The 2010 Quintessa, a blend of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with some Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (don’t forget, the proprietor Agustin Huneeus has a background in Chile), is an elegant, finesse-styled red offering deep, rich, cassis fruit, dusty, loamy soil notes, medium to full body and ripe tannins. This evolved, seductive, round, generous 2010 offers up attractive notes of white chocolate and flowers as it sits in the glass. This is one of the first vintages made by Charles Thomas who has an impressive resume having worked previously at Robert Mondavi Winery and Rudd Estate. This 2010 should be drunk over the next decade or more."

THE ESTATE "In 1989, Valeria and I found the property that would become Quintessa, a remarkable estate in the heart of the renowned Rutherford appellation of Napa Valley. With 280 acres, it was the last great undeveloped property in Napa Valley and had all the characteristics of a great wine estate: rolling hills, many different microclimates and a vast diversity of soil types. Now with nearly fifteen years of growth, the vines have lost their youthful exuberance and have developed into a balanced vineyard that needs little manipulation to produce low yields and concentrated flavors." Agustin Huneeus Vintner/Proprietor The Vineyard's Diversity Defines Quintessa "The fact that the property at Quintessa had never been planted to grapes before spoke to the vivacity of the soil and the absence of grape pests. But it was amazing the diversity of the land that convinced us of Quintessa's potential to be one of the truly great wine estates of the world. The estate includes a valley, a lake, a river, five hills, four microclimates and numerous different soil types. Few vineyards anywhere encompass such diversity." Valeria Huneeus Vineyard Master/Proprietor THE WINE "Quintessa, like all classic wines of the world, bears the same name as the vineyard from which it is made. Our goal is to produce the best expression of this extraordinary vineyard each year. In broad terms, Quintessa is a red meritage wine. The vineyard's diversity provides us wide stylistic options for the wine. Fruit from each component block of Quintessa is harvested, sorted, then gravity fed into either oak or stainless steel fermentation tanks. Once fermentation and maceration are complete, each block wine is aged separately for up to two years in french oak barrels in our caves. After this ageing period the components are brought together and the final Quintessa blend is created. The wine is then bottled and laid down for yet another year before release. Although each vintage is unique, we have discovered that finesse and elegance best express the character of the vineyard and as such, we blend for harmony, balance, and length of flavors. Above all, our objective is to make Quintessa a delicious wine that is complementary to food." Agustin Huneeus Vintner/Proprietor Read less

more red fruit earth and spice than on the 2005 vintage. the palate offers red currants, hints of spice, jam and blackberries. More concentration of fruit and has amazing aging potential.

I would pay serious money just to SMELL this wine, let alone drink it! The first time I tried it, it took me ten minutes of swirling and sniffing before I allowed myself to taste it. I was overwhelmed by the complexity and beauty of the nose - couldn't get enough of it. One of the best wines I have come across. Elegant, complexity in flavor and aromas - extremely BIG, yet balanced. The finish lingers for a minute and longer. Chip in with some friends and buy a bottle - It's fantastic!

After an hour in decanter this wine showed a dark shroud of rich black currant jam with vanillin oak, gram cracker crust and a bit of detectable heat. On the palate, this wine showcased a velvety full body with dark black fruits, allspice and molasses which led to a slightly bitter finish that stayed fresh on the palate for an easy minute with blackberry fruit.

Agustin and Valeria Huneeus developed Quintessa in 1990 to establish the property as one of the great red wine estates of the world. Quintessa bears the same name as the vineyard from which it is made.

Doesn't seem quite up there with previous vintages, although it's rich enough, with blackberry and cherry jam fruit accented with lots of new French oak. Tastes flashy, an easy wine to savor, but the softness and directness suggest it's best enjoyed ... Wine Enthusiast.
