THE ESTATE "In 1989, Valeria and I found the property that would become Quintessa, a remarkable estate in the heart of the renowned Rutherford appellation of Napa Valley. With 280 acres, it was the last great undeveloped property in Napa Valley and had all the characteristics of a great wine estate: rolling hills, many different microclimates and a vast diversity of soil types. Now with nearly fifteen years of growth, the vines have lost their youthful exuberance and have developed into a balanced vineyard that needs little manipulation to produce low yields and concentrated flavors." Agustin Huneeus Vintner/Proprietor The Vineyard's Diversity Defines Quintessa "The fact that the property at Quintessa had never been planted to grapes before spoke to the vivacity of the soil and the absence of grape pests. But it was amazing the diversity of the land that convinced us of Quintessa's potential to be one of the truly great wine estates of the world. The estate includes a valley, a lake, a river, five hills, four microclimates and numerous different soil types. Few vineyards anywhere encompass such diversity." Valeria Huneeus Vineyard Master/Proprietor THE WINE "Quintessa, like all classic wines of the world, bears the same name as the vineyard from which it is made. Our goal is to produce the best expression of this extraordinary vineyard each year. In broad terms, Quintessa is a red meritage wine. The vineyard's diversity provides us wide stylistic options for the wine. Fruit from each component block of Quintessa is harvested, sorted, then gravity fed into either oak or stainless steel fermentation tanks. Once fermentation and maceration are complete, each block wine is aged separately for up to two years in french oak barrels in our caves. After this ageing period the components are brought together and the final Quintessa blend is created. The wine is then bottled and laid down for yet another year before release. Although each vintage is unique, we have discovered that finesse and elegance best express the character of the vineyard and as such, we blend for harmony, balance, and length of flavors. Above all, our objective is to make Quintessa a delicious wine that is complementary to food." Agustin Huneeus Vintner/Proprietor Read less

Quite ripe and oaky, made in a big, impressive style. Knocks you out with the density and concentration of its blackcurrant, dark chocolate and coffee flavors that are well-oaked. Completely dry, and with a tart, espresso-like bitterness, this beauty is guaranteed to age, with its firm tannins. Now through 2015.

Tough-edged, with firm, austere, dry and chalky tannins, but also a rich, dense, minerally core of currant and black cherry, ending with a dash of leather. Drink now through 2010. Tasted twice, with consistent notes.

The core blend for the 2001 is 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and 7% Cabernet Franc. The wine is rich, but it was disjointed and clumsy when tasted. It possesses high tannin and extract. This thick, juicy 2001 has fine potential, but it requires time in barrel to settle down. It was one of the few 2001s I tasted that was not already seamless and brilliant. However, everything in it is impressive, including its purity as well as length.

The 2001 Proprietary Red Wine (a 9,000-case blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon and 14% Merlot) reveals a dark, saturated ruby/purple color as well as a sweet nose of black currants, forest floor, cedar, and tobacco leaf characteristics. Made in an elegant, medium-bodied, Bordeaux-like style with good fruit on the attack, but high tannin in the finish, it is best consumed between 2005ndash;2012.
