Quintessa(1996)
Skin contact: 21 days
Time in oak: 17.5 months
Type of oak: 100% French, 75% new
Release date: September 1999
1996 was a warm season and a small crop so there is a ripeness of fruit that shines through in the bouquet. There is a tight concentration on the palate, with soft, ripe tannins and deep fruit and spice flavors. This is a powerful wine that has mellowed with an elegant, silky finish.

- In keeping with our belief that blending early improves balance and complexity, Quintessa 1996 was blended just 4 months after harvest. We chose eight components of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc as the best expression of the Quintessa vineyard. The wine is rich and dense with a beautiful structure and the promise of great aging ability. Quintessa's signature softness and elegance will continue to develop until at least 2006.

- An excellent Napa Valley '96 wine. I paired this recently with a Petite Filet and Rosemary crust. It was relatively tight after I pulled the cork, but after 90 minutes, it softened and had that elegant, silky finish.

- Another minty nose, with strong oak aromas. Excellent concentration, structure and balance on the palate - quite lovely.
