Quinta Sardonia Sardon del Duero Tempranillo Castilla Y Leon 2005

Winemaker's Notes:

The vineyards are plowed under and compost (which is made at the property) is used between the rows once a year. Harvest is always carried out by hand and there is a very aggressive triage at the winery before crush. Fermentation is in stainless steel tanks of 10,000 liters which are specifically made for the estate and are very low and wide.

The vineyards, which are between 50 and 150 metres above sea level, enjoy an exceptional microclimate characterised by mild temperatures, with an annual average of 15º C, very little frost and abundant rainfall. This microclimate is ideal for ripening, with a high sugar content and a lower acidity level than in other parts of the Rías Baixas designation of origin area that lie further to the north, where the quality of the wine is more variable because of the climate. This biodynamic property, located on the outskirts of the Ribera del Duero region, is a project from famed winemaker Peter Sissek. The property is planted with both Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) and Bordeaux varietals, creating a lively blend with bright fruit and an immense elegance.

This new estate is just beyond the western border of Ribera del Duero where Abadia Retuerta is located. Peter Sisseck is a co-owner and the vineyard is farmed biodynamically. The wine is a glass-coating opaque purple. It offers up a splendid concoction of toasty oak, crushed stone, floral notes, spice box, and wild black fruits. This leads to a forward, friendly wine with lots of juicy flavor, excellent depth, and an altogether hedonistic personality. Already exhibiting complexity, this wine will continue to evolve but few will be able to resist its seductions for very long. ** Only 11 in Stock **

The 2005 Quinta Sardonia has a slightly roasted character, extra layers of spicy fruit, outstanding concentration, rich, succulent flavors, and lots of power. Give it 5-7 years in the cellar and drink it from 2016 to 2030. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate.
