What to Expect

Port wine is one of the great dessert wines of the world. Based on a blend that usually features Touriga Nacional, vintage Port is a rich red wine witch is fortified with grape spirits. It combines the chewy, tannic bite of red wine with a sweetness that helps buffer the added alcohol and supports the spicy plum and dark berry fruits. Vintage Port is capable of aging and improving for decades. Other types of Port include Ruby Port, which is enjoyed in its youth for it fresh fruit, Tawny Port, which has been aged in wood for years giving it its tawny color and progressively nuttier flavors as the wine increases in age, and Colheita port, which is a Tawny Port from a single vintage.

One of the best ports for the price from the classic 2000 vintage, this is killer stuff! Declared only in very good years, Silval Vintage Port is made in the traditional way. Having spent 18 months in oak cask the wine is allowed to develop in the bottle, it will throw a deposit and need decanting. The Silval Vintage combines power, complexity and concentration with a forward, fruity style making it approachable when quite young. Superdark and powerful. Shows raisin, spice, coffee and violet aromas. Full-bodied, very chewy, with lots of grip and loads of fruit. Very long in the mouth. Super value. -Wine Spectator

Jancis
Robinson

Rating: 16/20 - As reviewed by Jancis Robinson Lighter colour than 22 though very respectable deep crimson. Sweet start to the palate. Not massive intensity in the middle though no shortage of tannins (maybe slightly of acidity) on the finish. A rather truncated wine. Rich and pruney for earlier drinking. Dry finish.
