Quinta Do Zambujeiro Monte Do Castanheiro Tinto 2007

Member Review by Lotte Delima Edwards:

Vinification:Brilliant red.intense and fresh nose of flowers, Dark Fruit, spices. Medium to full-bodied, dine and subtle tannins, very balanced. Tasty and juicy fruit , ends with fine notes of vanilla. Excellent to drink with cheese/ham platters or light dishes. Serve at 12-14 degree. Ratings: Robert Parker 89/100 The 2007 "MONTE DO COSTANHEIRO" is this very fine boutiques enrty level, but it is often charming and this may be the best on I've had yet. It is a kitchen sink blend of Trincaderia , Aragonez, Alicante Bouschet, Castelao and Cabernet Souvignon. Refined and elegant , with soft, velvety texture, this gains a little complexity with air and shows stucture and some backbone, too. Indeed,it can seem relatively powerful after it wakes up and airs out. It is quite attractive, starting sexy and flavorful, with touches of sweet oak on the finish from its 12 months in French Oak, but it ends with some character and intensity.

Purchased by an enthusiastic Swiss wine lover in 1998, Quinta do Zambujeiro is considered among the top Alentejo wineries. Its team of experts includes experienced wine maker Nuno Malta (General Manager) assisted by Luis Lourinho and the reputated Globalwine oenologist Alain Bramaz. Located approximately 170km east of Lisbon in the southeastern Portuguese region of Alentejo. The vineyard spans 30 hectares of vines with ages ranging between 3 and 33 years, featuring Trincadeira Aragonez Periquita (Castelão Francês) Alicante Bouschet Touriga Nacional Cabernet Sauvignon. The soil is of schist and clay. Viticulture: Quinta do Zambujeiro works in accordance with the procedures of environment-friendly viticulture. The goal is to preserve and protect the beautiful nature and terroir of the estate. The base of our wines is the vineyard. Our skilled workers treat every vine with great care; without the hard work in sometimes harsh weather conditions we could not produce these great wines! We believe strongly that only vineyards with low yields can produce wines of high concentration in flavor and taste. Therefore we reduce all our vineyards to 25 hl/ha or 18 hl/ha for special cuvées. Vinification: All our wines are hand made. All grapes are hand picked. We use gentle grape-and wine-handling techniques, for e.g., grapes are transported in small plastic crates, never pumped. Each grape is controlled before going into the wine; what we would not like to eat should not be drunken by our customers later! The grapes are fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks and in fermenting vessels of French oak. Long macerations on skins up to 7 weeks extract the soft tannins and stabilize color. All malo-lactic fermentation takes place all in barrels for better integration of oak flavors. All the wine is barrel matured in French oak for up to two years and bottled without any filtration or fining. Read less
