Quinta Do Vesuvio Port Blend Porto Vintage 1997
Quinta do Vesuvio is the most spectacular Quinta in the Douro valley. Located in the wild and serenely beautiful eastern reaches of the Upper Douro valley, 120 kilometres east of Oporto and 45 kilometres from the Spanish border, Quinta do Vesuvio stands alone both in terms of remoteness and sheer grandeur.

When the Symington family purchased this classic 19th century quinta in the Douro Superior in the 1980s, they made the decision to bottle wines from its steep slopes in the single quinta or chateau mode. Other Symington brands use their single qunita bottling in lesser vintages; Vesuvio is only ever Vesuvio. The quinta has produced some pretty wines, but rsquo;94 has been the first widely declared vintage to put it to the test; could one Symington estate perform at the level of the familyrsquo;s great branded vineyard blends? For Vesuvio in rsquo;94, the answer is resoundingly positive. Its deep color, backward aroma and impacted fruit show this to be a massive wine. Its black fruit shimmers with quality, tightly bound by tannin, yet still retains the softness that distinguishes Vesuvio from many other wines of the arid Douro Superior.
A ripe and rich rsquo;95 boasting a remarkable essence of crushed berries, this is classic Port. Itrsquo;s full-bodied and quite sweet, with the velvetiest of tannins and a long, long, ripe fruit finish. At its best after 2008.
While many houses either declined to declare the vintage or made single-quinta Ports in 1995, Vesuvio crafted this classic. Itrsquo;s even slightly better than Vesuviorsquo;s 1992 vintage Port, which checked in at No. 35 on the Wine Spectatorrsquo;s 1995 Top 100.
Impressive. Dark purple in color, with lots of pretty plum, floral and berry aromas. Full-bodied, with very racy tannins and a long, fruity finish. Reserved, it needs time; best after 2004.
Terrific aromas of berries and violets with a hint if mint. Full-bodied and lightly sweet, with silky fine tannins that build on the palate. Outstanding concentration and harmony. Greatest Vesuvio this century. Try after 2010.
This impressive wine, with an opaque ruby/purple color, reveals excellent richness, layers of flavor, well-integrated alcohol and tannin, moderate sweetness, and a long, heady finish. Pure and impressively built, it should drink well in 5ndash;7 years. Anticipated maturity: 2002ndash;2025.
Wine Advocate ReviewA delicious, forward, dark saturated ruby/purple-colored port, this 1997 reveals copious quantities of jammy, grapy, black fruit flavors intermixed with earth and spice, full body, and silky tannin. It should drink well soon, but last for two decades. Drink - 2020.
