Quinta Do Vesuvio Port Blend Porto Vintage 1995

Winemaker's Notes:

International Wine & Spirits Competition 2007 - SILVER MEDAL Quinta do Vesuvio is arguably the most magnificent estate in the Douro valley. Located in the beautiful and austere Port-growing region of the Upper Douro valley, its history dates back to the 16th Century. All of the grapes are hand-picked, with a careful selection being made. Vesuvio is one of the very few estates in the Douro where all of the wines are made using the traditional treading method in granite lagares, among the largest in the Douro valley, and offered exclusively as a single Quinta Vintage Port. In 1989, Quinta do Vesuvio was purchased by the Symington family whose involvement in the production and shipping of Port began more than a century ago. Vesuvio is now ranked as one of the top-tier Vintage Port producers. Over the last decade, Quinta do Vesuvio has amassed an impressive number of awards at international tasting competitions around the world. The wine is rich, dark and concentrated; it has aromas of violets and “esteva” (rock rose) and is very smooth and elegant on the palate. Wine Spectator gives this wine 95 points, and says, "A ripe and rich '95 boasting a remarkable essence of crushed berries, this is classic Port. It's full-bodied and quite sweet, with the velvetiest of tannins and a long, long ripe fruit finish. At its best after 2008."

While many houses either declined to declare the vintage or made single-quinta Ports in 1995, Vesuvio crafted this classic. Itandrsquo;s even slightly better than Vesuvioandrsquo;s 1992 vintage Port, which checked in at No. 35 on the Wine Spectatorandrsquo;s 1995 Top 100.

When the Symington family purchased this classic 19th century quinta in the Douro Superior in the 1980s, they made the decision to bottle wines from its steep slopes in the single quinta or chateau mode. Other Symington brands use their single qunita bottling in lesser vintages; Vesuvio is only ever Vesuvio. The quinta has produced some pretty wines, but rsquo;94 has been the first widely declared vintage to put it to the test; could one Symington estate perform at the level of the familyrsquo;s great branded vineyard blends? For Vesuvio in rsquo;94, the answer is resoundingly positive. Its deep color, backward aroma and impacted fruit show this to be a massive wine. Its black fruit shimmers with quality, tightly bound by tannin, yet still retains the softness that distinguishes Vesuvio from many other wines of the arid Douro Superior.

This impressive wine, with an opaque ruby/purple color, reveals excellent richness, layers of flavor, well-integrated alcohol and tannin, moderate sweetness, and a long, heady finish. Pure and impressively built, it should drink well in 5ndash;7 years. Anticipated maturity: 2002ndash;2025.

Displays rich, ripe, boysenberry, blueberry, cassis, leather, rose petals, violets and coffee undertones. it is complex and concentrated with flavors of mixed berry and black fruit, cocoa, coffee, leather, tobacco, cedar, dates, spice, white pepper and vanilla. It has tremendous depth with pure fruit extract — sublime.

Impressive. Dark purple in color, with lots of pretty plum, floral and berry aromas. Full-bodied, with very racy tannins and a long, fruity finish. Reserved, it needs time; best after 2004.
