As you approach the entrance to the quinta from Pinhão, you will see the famous broad terraces of Quinta do Noval on the right. The Quinta, which is principally situated in the valley of the small Pinhao river, a tributary of the Douro, has approximately 145 hectares of vines, ranging in altitude from 100 metres, at the level of the Pinhao river, to 350 metres at the summit of the valley. The Quinta is approached by a long drive, covered by trellised vines. This is the first view of the quinta that you see as you drive up. Read less

One of the vintage's standouts, the 2000 Quinta do Noval is incredibly rich and intense, with a density that made me think I should reach for a spoon. Chocolate and coffee, prune and date aromas; plum cake flavors. Despite the richness, there is a superb backbone of acidity and ripe tannins that suggests peak maturity is probably two decades or more away.

Saturated deep ruby. Sweet aromas of black cherry, cassis, licorice, molasses, minerals, toffee and violet. Dense, sweet and pliant, with outstanding precision and depth of flavor. Like the Silval, this boasts a seductively creamy texture. The explosive, mounting finish offers a fine dusting of ripe, suave tannins and great breadth. Deceptively easy to taste today owing to its finesse, but it's hard to believe that it won't shut down in bottle in the near future. This wine features a particularly high percentage of touriga nacional.

Novalandrsquo;s replanting in the 1990s included a high proportion of touriga nacional, which shows in this wine as a dynamic and resonant blueberry blue. Thereandrsquo;s also boysenberry, pomegranate, bosky cherry and schist. Itandrsquo;s ornate and vibrant andmdash; the potent fruit suspended by the tannin, then exploding into luscious chocolate blackness; the finish is notably refreshing. With several days of air, this wineandrsquo;s massive extract takes on a slightly bitter edge, suggesting it may not be the longest lived of the great 2007s. Nevertheless it is one of the keepers andmdash; likely to reach its peak in the 30-year range and to coast for years beyond that.

The inky, purple-colored, opaque 2003 Quinta do Noval Vintage Port soars from the glass, revealing dates, black cherries, copious flowers, and plums. Full-bodied, broad, and lush, this top-flight wine is harmonious and exhibits stupendous purity of fruit. Blueberries, cherries, and candied strawberries can be found in its nuanced, lengthy, plum-laced core as well as in its immensely long, dried berry-tinged finish. Drink this beauty between 2020 and 2045+.

Offers intense aremas of squeezed tangerine, blackberry and blueberry. Very complex. Full-bodied, medium sweet and chewy. Extracted yet balanced, with an intense fruity and grapey character. Tight and reserved on the finish. Best after 2015.

The saturated blue/purple/black-colored 2000 Vintage Port reveals a distinctive bouquet of graphite, creme de cassis liqueur, licorice, and spice. Sweet tannin, full body, and outstanding concentration provide an impressive entry on the palate. Notions of chocolate make an appearance in the long finish of this sweet, lush, precocious effort. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2030.

What a nose. Ripe fruit, with chocolate, blackberries and raisins. Full-bodied and medium sweet, with velvety tannins. Finish goes on and on. Layered and wonderful. Best after 2014.
