Quinta Do Noval Porto Vintage 2000

Winemaker's Notes:

The nose has complexity and power in combination - a sure sign of a title contender. Despite this apparently heavyweight nature, however, we have immediately obvious elegance on the palate. This is underpinned by fine tannins and piles of dark fruits. And enveloping it all is a creamy mouthfeel which builds in intensity.

As you approach the entrance to the quinta from Pinhão, you will see the famous broad terraces of Quinta do Noval on the right. The Quinta, which is principally situated in the valley of the small Pinhao river, a tributary of the Douro, has approximately 145 hectares of vines, ranging in altitude from 100 metres, at the level of the Pinhao river, to 350 metres at the summit of the valley. The Quinta is approached by a long drive, covered by trellised vines. This is the first view of the quinta that you see as you drive up. Read less

Inky purplish-red and nearly opaque, with a sweet plum and grapey aromatic profile. Densely packed with boysenberry and plump purple fruit that is lightly laced with licorice. Full-bodied, and expansive on the palate with a great tannin structure and fabulous length on the finish. A distinctive Noval and with their third big VP in a row, this Shipper is clearly back on track and at the top of their game. One of the better wines of the 2000 crop.

The 2007 Quinta do Noval Vintage Port is a star of the vintage. Dense purple-colored, it gives up an already complex aromatic array of lavender, Asian spices, incense, and an amalgam of black fruits with a hint of chocolate in the background. Plush and mouth-filling, this large-scaled Port manages an uncanny blending of elegance and power. Long and savory in the finish, it will continue to blossom for another 20+ years and drink well through its 50th birthday if not longer.

Noval's replanting in the 1990s included a high proportion of touriga nacional, which shows in this wine as a dynamic and resonant blueberry blue. There's also boysenberry, pomegranate, bosky cherry and schist. It's ornate and vibrant - the potent fruit suspended by the tannin, then exploding into luscious chocolate blackness; the finish is notably refreshing. With several days of air, this wine's massive extract takes on a slightly bitter edge, suggesting it may not be the longest lived of the great 2007s. Nevertheless it is one of the keepers - likely to reach its peak in the 30-year range and to coast for years beyond that.

(Barrel tasting) Impressive aromas of crushed blackberry, mineral and dried flowers. Intense and deep. Full-bodied, very sweet and dense on the palate, with big, round tannins and a long finish.

The saturated blue/purple/black-colored 2000 Vintage Port reveals a distinctive bouquet of graphite creme de cassis liqueur licorice and spice. Sweet tannin full body and outstanding concentration provide an impressive entry on the palate. Notions of chocolate make an appearance in the long finish of this sweet lush precocious effort. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2030. Robert Parkers Wine Advocate.

Very fine young Port. Fascinating aromas of crushed fruit, tar and wet earth. Turns floral. Full-bodied, medium sweet, with chewy, velvety tannins and a long finish. Grips your mouth. A balanced and caressing Noval. Best after 2012.

A pure fruited wine, with an unusual touch of toast and new wood. The fruit is well structured with flavors of thyme and rosemary. This is a smooth, polished Port, which is definitely in a modern style of winemaking.

What a nose. Ripe fruit, with chocolate, blackberries and raisins. Full-bodied and medium sweet, with velvety tannins. Finish goes on and on. Layered and wonderful. Best after 2014.
