Quinta Do Noval Port Blend Porto Colheita 2003

Winemaker's Notes:

Luisa Amorim, owner/wine-director at Quinta Nova -a vineyard estate that dates back to 1764- goes against the grain in making an un-oaked wine in Portugal's traditional and esteemed Duoro Valley. Her wine is a blend of native varieties: Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinto Cao. It is steel tank fermented and unfiltered, showing a delicate balance of minerality with dark fruits, blackberry, and cassis. -Sadie F.

As you approach the entrance to the quinta from Pinhão, you will see the famous broad terraces of Quinta do Noval on the right. The Quinta, which is principally situated in the valley of the small Pinhao river, a tributary of the Douro, has approximately 145 hectares of vines, ranging in altitude from 100 metres, at the level of the Pinhao river, to 350 metres at the summit of the valley. The Quinta is approached by a long drive, covered by trellised vines. This is the first view of the quinta that you see as you drive up. Read less

Colheita port is not a well-understood phenomenon and is the sort of wine to serve to people who "don't like port" or who are not sure - it's likely to convert them to enthusiasts. Quinta do Noval make a very competent Colheita. Highly recommended.

An almost floral, nutty nose. The palate is quite rich, nutty and powerful. A smooth mouthfeel, and good balance. There's still a little tannic grip in the background. Drink now.

One of the wines Quinta do Noval produces that was never exploited by previous importers are their Colheitas which are essentially single vintage Tawny ports that are kept in barrel until the winery is ready to sell them. These impressive wines are one-hundred percent from the vintage shown on the bottle. Considering their ages they are reasonably priced. The 1964 Colheita possessed a ruby/amber color excellent richness but perhaps not quite the fragrance complexity or richness of the 1971. Nevertheless it is a top-notch example of a single vintage mature tawny ports. I do not know what Quinta do Noval's opinion might be but it seems to me that these single vintage old tawnys once bottled are unlikely to change since the wine's evolution has taken place in barrel prior to bottling. I would think vintages such as these could easily last 15 20 or even 30 years but I am not sure since this type of port has rarely been exploited in the international marketplace. 90pts Robert Parker.
