Quinta Do Noval 97 Jg 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

"Black ruby-purple color, one of the darkest colors of the vintage. Superripe, high-pitched, rather brooding aromas of black and red berries, bitter chocolate, flowers and spices. Hugely rich, sweet and mouthfilling yet at the same time savory, with uncanny verve for such a thick, silky wine; darker in character than the Silval. This saturates every millimeter of the palate with black fruit and spice flavors. Is any other 2007 this dense, deep and ripe? A wine of great intensity and persistence...96" IWC 1/10 "The 2007 Quinta do Noval is one of the most powerful and pure examples of this wine that I have ever had the pleasure to taste. There will be no Nacional bottling this year, as the entire production of Nacional has gone into the vintage bottling of Noval. The bouquet on the 2007 Quinta do Noval is magical, with its bottomless depth and glorious purity combining to offer up a magical mélange of black cherries, dark plums, black raspberries, a touch of tar, bitter chocolate, a great base of soil, fennel seed and cedary wood. This really smells of young Nacional this year. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, deep and beautifully balanced, with a rock solid core, stunning purity, firm, substantial tannins, stunningly tangy acids and profound length and grip on the endless finish. It is a good thing that Quinta do Noval did not make a Nacional in 2007, as it would probably have to be scored in excess of a hundred! This is clearly the greatest young vintage of Quinta do Noval that I have ever had the pleasure to taste. 2030-2130....97+" JG 10/12

As you approach the entrance to the quinta from Pinhão, you will see the famous broad terraces of Quinta do Noval on the right. The Quinta, which is principally situated in the valley of the small Pinhao river, a tributary of the Douro, has approximately 145 hectares of vines, ranging in altitude from 100 metres, at the level of the Pinhao river, to 350 metres at the summit of the valley. The Quinta is approached by a long drive, covered by trellised vines. This is the first view of the quinta that you see as you drive up. Read less
