Quinta Do Crasto Lbv Port 2011

Winemaker's Notes:

Situated on the North bank of the river Douro, half way between Regua and Pinhao, Quinta do Crasto is arguably the finest estate for the production of red wine and also superb Port wines. This late bottled Vintage (LBV) shows intense black cherry fruit with cedary notes. A ripe and mouth-filling Port wine with a rich sweet finish. Perfect for Christmas.

Quinta do Crasto is located on the right bank of the river Douro, halfway between Régua and Pinhão. The quinta covers 130 hectares, of which 70 are planted with grade “A” vineyards. Sitting on a privileged location in the Douro Demarcated Region, Quinta do Crasto has been in the family of Leonor and Jorge Roquette for over a century. Like other great Douro quintas, its origins lie in ancient times (the name CRASTO comes from the Latin word castrum, a Roman fort). References to Quinta do Crasto date as far back as the early seventeenth century, long before the Douro became the world’s first demarcated wine region in 1756. Large investments were made over the last years to restructure the vineyards and install modern winery equipment, guaranteeing the production of high quality table wines, such as Crasto Douro Red, Quinta do Crasto Douro Reserva Old Vines, single variety wines (100 % Touriga Nacional and 100% Tinta Roriz) and single vineyard wines (Vinha da Ponte and Vinha Maria Teresa), as well as top port wine categories such as Late Bottled Vintage and Vintage Port. While using state-of-the-art vinification technology, the quinta has always retained its traditional foot treading method in granite tanks, called “lagares”. All the investments made in the past combined with the tradition and passion that is put into the wine making, has given Quinta do Crasto a prominent name in wine market scene, at home and abroad. Vintage: 2002 12/04/2009

With its natural strategic command of the river both up and down stream, it is not difficult to imagine this as the site of a Roman fort - for "Crasto" is a corruption, it is said, of the Latin "castrum" and, the remains of a Roman road can still be seen at no great distance from the quinta. Quinta do Crasto was awarded the "2002 Portuguese Winery of the Year" at the International Wine Challenge; it is recognized internationally as the premium producer of table wines and dated Ports - Vintage and Late Bottle Vintage. Quinta do Crasto Traditional Late Bottled Vintage Wine from a single year, bottled after spending around four years ageing in cask. Extended maturation in wood means that the wines are ready to drink soon after they are bottled (unlike a Vintage Port). Quinta do Crasto bottles LBV without any fining or filtration in order to retain as much character and intensity as possible, hence its designation as traditional. After a year or so in bottle, the wine will throw a sediment and should be decanted. The wines will develop well for ten years or more.
