Quinta de Ventozelo Red Blend Douro Tinto 2004

Winemaker's Notes:

Since 1999, Quinta de Ventozelo belongs to the Spanish group Proinsa. The property is located in the town of São João da Pesqueira, in the Upper Corgo, an ideal place in the heart of the Demarcated Region of the Douro, on the left bank of the river, overlooking the Pinhão Valley. Quinta de Ventozelo is one of the oldest quintas in the region, as well as one of the biggest and best located. Until the property was bought by Proinsa, it was producing Port wine in bulk for big shippers from Vila Nova de Gaia. The property has an area of more than 600 Ha. The vineyard area covers 200 Ha., all of it classified with the letter "A" (highest ranking). About 10 Ha. Some believe it is a secret: for us it is simply ancestral wisdom, which takes into account different grape varieties, the quality of the soil and sun exposure levels. The vinification of the Port wine still takes place in our traditional lagares (tanks made of stone) where grapes are foot crushed, providing Quinta de Ventozelo with a wide range of quality wines. Currently there are 11 25.000-litre stainless steel tanks, with controlled temperature. We are redesigning the vinification centre to increase the production capacity while guaranteeing the same quality levels. There will be an integrated centre with two vinification plants: a traditional one to produce Port wines, and a modern one to produce still wines. The annual production is currently of 1.000.000 bottles of DOC wine and 500.000 of Port wine. Read less

88 points. This wine’s aroma is very strong and well defined. It’s deep and spicy, with dark red fruit tones, chocolate covered blueberries and plum, combined with beautiful foresty aromas that make me think of fresh pine needles and rosemary flowers. A good spin in the glass brings out some black currant, charcoal, and a little bit of suede, with a menthol component showing through just around the edges. The palate opens with plum and fruit cake flavors, molasses, and kitchen spices. There’s a bit of leather, some wild honey, and some perfectly ripe black plum and raspberry, leading to a combination of all of these things unfolding lightly on the finish. This is a nicely done wine. It has perfect balance of fruit and spice, and the tannins are firm but pleasantly delicate. It’s smooth and medium bodied with good varietal definition and a nice amount of complexity. If you’re new to Touriga Nacional, have never had one outside of a blend, or are already a fan and are looking for a solid one, this is a great buy at the price. Deep, clear garnet red with an intense violet, chokecherry, hawthorn with slight undertones of exotic spice. The aroma feels silky on the nose. Fantastic wine. The satin tannins and medium acidity create a round, lush mouthfeel. Slightly jammy on the plate with integrated red fruit, cigar and floral flavors. I highly recommend this wine! It's a crazy and fun combination of both artesanal and sophisticated sensations.

Dark translucent ruby red, showing black pepper, plum, black raspberry and eucalyptus with subtle anise notes. Beautiful nose reminding me of a thick and juicy Thanksgiving sauce with subtle spice and deep red fruit flavors. Bright acidity peaking on the back palate with firm tannin spreading along the sides, integrating well into this medium bodied wine. Deep rich red fruit take precedent on the palate.

Not being able to afford the big Duro wines of Spain i recently decided to try some of the Portugeese Duro wines and this one in particular is very good and great value. If you like a big tasty well balanced wine this is for you. Superb value.
